Ms. Willie Mae “Brown Sugar” Pouncey, affectionately known as Ms. Pouncey, was a beacon of unwavering light and love, whose journey began on September 21, 1952, in the warm community of Abbeville, Alabama. Her life's melody came to a peaceful end on May 29, 2024, in the comforting embrace of Dothan, Alabama. Ms. Pouncey's story is not one of sorrow, but a celebration of a life lived with purpose, passion, and an endless capacity to nurture those around her.
Born to Willie Harper and Ruthie Mae Pouncey, Ms. Pouncey was a sister among six, sharing her early years with Jimmy, Billy, Charlie, Ella Ruth, and Georgia. She later found her life's partner in Charlie C. Moultry, and together they turned individual melodies into a harmonious symphony. Though her parents, siblings, and dear husband preceded her in death, their influence and love echoed through the life Ms. Pouncey led.
Her legacy flourishes through her beloved children, Michelle (Patrick) Nettles, Natasha Pouncey, Shawn (Nicole) Pouncey, Chris (LaToris) Pouncey, and Darrane Moultry, and her cherished goddaughter, Kiesha White. Each child, a unique verse in her song of life, expanded her joy with twenty grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren, whose names and lives are testaments to Ms. Pouncey's enduring love and guidance.
Ms. Pouncey's sister, Izetta Pouncey, remains a keeper of their shared memories, along with her aunt Daisy Pouncey, brother-in-law Kenneth Dawkins, her special cousins Loretta Buggs and Linda Pouncey, and a circle of best friends who stood by her in every season of life. The tapestry of Ms. Pouncey's life is further adorned with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends, each a precious thread woven into her story.
Education was a valued chapter in Ms. Pouncey's life, marked by her graduation from high school and over three decades of faithful membership at Saint Paul Missionary Baptist Church under Reverend R. Williams. Her spiritual journey continued at New Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church with Pastor Howard Valentine, where she remained a steadfast participant until her health began to wane.
Ms. Pouncey's commitment to God, family, and friends was the cornerstone of her existence. Her work history and association involvement were a reflection of her priorities, as she poured herself into the lives of others, leaving a legacy of compassion and service that will continue to inspire and uplift.
As we gather to honor the memory of Ms. Pouncey, let us remember her not with heavy hearts but with the joy that she herself carried throughout her life. She taught us to embrace each day with gratitude, to find strength in our faith, and to extend love and kindness without reservation. Ms. Pouncey's story is not one that ends, for it is carried forward in the lives of those she touched, in the laughter of her grandchildren, and in the love that binds us all.
