Wilbur McKay Life and Times

Ms. Wilbur McKay, age 84, of Newville, Alabama passed away Thursday, March 24, 2022.

Visitation will be Tuesday, March 29, 2022 4-6 PM at the funeral home.

Graveside will be held on Wednesday, March 30, 2022 at 11 AM at the Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery, Newville, AL under the direction of the caring staff of Scott's Chapel Hill Mortuary "Because We Care".

 

 

Mrs. Wilbur Louise Humphrey McKay was born on May 18, 1937, in Newville, Alabama to the parentage of the late Willie Frank and Vera B. Humphrey.

Wilbur was married to the late Carl E. McKay and to this union two daughters were born, Sandranetta and Shalonda (Shawn).

At an early age she confessed her love for Christ and joined Mount Sinai Baptist Church in Newville, Alabama where she served as Sunday School Teacher, Matron, member of the Missionary Society, and Food Bank Coordinator.

Wilbur graduated Valedictorian of her class from Newville Rosenwald School at the age of 15 years old. She earned her bachelor and masters degrees from Alabama State University, Montgomery, Alabama. She was employed by the Henry County Training School and Headland Middle School where she impacted her students through her love of education and discipline. She retired after 41 years of dedicated service to the students of Henry County.

She was a member of Alpha Pi Chi National Sorority, Inc. and the Order of Eastern Star, Lookwell Chapter #219, Past Worthy Matron.

She served her community faithfully as Newville City Councilwoman and Mayor Pro Tempore.

In addition to being a dedicated and loving mother and grandmother, Wilbur also enjoyed gardening, fishing, walking, traveling, spending time with family and friends, and the frequent casino trip.

Wilbur touched the lives of many with her words, compassion, and kindness. She was an outspoken woman with a passion for education and inspiring excellence in her students.  She was a renowned orator and speech writer. Her love for her family and close friends was immense.

She is preceded in death by her parents, and siblings: James Willis Humphrey, Gloria Ann Horne, and Juliette Lee.

Wilbur departed this life on March 24, 2022.

She leaves to cherish her wonderful memory: two devoted daughters, Sandranetta McKay Abney and Shalonda M. (Richard) Cass; granddaughters Jocelyn (Jessie) McAlpine and London Cass; grandson: Jordan Abney; niece: Tavion (Luther) Johnson; great niece: Taylor Johnson; nephews: Daniel L. Lee, Kenneth Humphrey, Bruce Humphrey, James Humphrey, Darryl Humphrey, Mickey Horne, Michael Horne, Martin McKay, Makylen Horne, and Austin Boyd. Devoted Godson: Rickey Allen. Devoted Goddaughter: Sherlyn Johnson. Devoted sister-n-law: Catherine McKay. Devoted family friends: Joe Fain, Mary Girtman, Elaine Hogans, Vivian Johnson, Lamont Lewis, Annie R. Russ, and Patricia Smith.
