Warren Johnson Life and Times

Warren Otis Johnson is a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and a proud Veteran who departed this life peacefully on May 15, 2025, at the age of 91.

Born on February 15, 1934, and raised in Tuckahoe, New York by his parents, Otis and Bessie Johnson.  Warren attended and graduated from Tuckahoe High School in Tuckahoe New York.  He lived a life defined by quiet strength and was an absolute gentleman.

On February 27, 1951, he bravely enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he served with honor and distinction during the Korean War from 1951 to 1954. He was stationed in Fort Bliss Texas for 8 weeks and trained as LT AAA WPNS Maintenance (Lieutenant Anti-Aircraft Artillery Weapon Protection Network System.) He received the occupation medal (Germany) and National Defense Service Medal during his time in the military.

After his military service, Warren returned to Tuckahoe to build a life rooted in family and community.  He married Norma Bernice Johnson and the two of them became the proud parents of a beautiful son, Warren Anthony Johnson.

He became active in the freemasons and the Elks Lodge in Tuckahoe, New York and a member of Shiloh Baptist Church.

He retired from the New York Metropolitan Transit Authority (22 years), where he was known for his hard work, integrity and generous spirit.  He later married the love of his life, Nettie Mae Johnson of which the two of them combined have five children and a blissful marriage of 37 years.  He often would tease publicly and affectionately say to Nettie when he stepped on her toes, “I’m sorry baby, I won’t do it no more-never, ever!” His words regarding his wife to a friend was, “I would not be here today, if it wasn’t for her-She saved my life.”

He and Nettie later moved to their forever home in Dothan, Alabama where he volunteered for the Salvation Army for several years.  He was named the acclaimed “Bell Ringer of the Year” for three consecutive years.  He found great friendships, laughter and love for 35 years in Dothan.  He attended the Walton Park Recreation Center weekly where he enjoyed playing Rummikub game at home and with friends at the center.  He was well known as the “Bear” by those friends and often was told by others, “Don’t poke the bear.”  He was a member of Patterson Street Free Will Baptist Church.  His favorite pass-time was watching television (CNN) religiously.  He loved life and traveled with Nettie from the East Coast to Alabama until he was 90 years old.  He lived life fully, was quick witted, and such a pleasure to be around.

Warren is survived by his wife Nettie Mae Johnson, his sons Warren (Dominique) Johnson, Edward (Karianne) Clark, John (Dawn) Clark, his daughters, Linda (Marshall) Brazil, Lisa (Kevin) Clark-Rowell, granddaughter-like a daughter, Ciara (John) Long. Grandchildren David Johnson and Gabriella Johnson (Cale Kaminsky), in addition to a host of extended grandchildren and great-grandchildren as well as a devoted and caring friend James Britt.
