Vernell Patterson was born to the late Melanie Daniels Floyd and Frank Daniels transitioned from earthly home to heavenly home on Aug 1, 2023. Vernell was born in Barbour County and migrated to Dothan, Alabama in her adolescence years.
Vernell graduated from George Washington Carver High School in 1955 then shortly there after gained employed at Dothan Hoisery but after the company moved its location to North Carolina. She remained grounded and started her next career journey at Southeast Alabama Medical Center working in the dietary department where she developed a passion for feeding people; something she started perfecting since she was a knee high to a toad frog.
Vernell met and married J.L. Patterson later to be known as “The Transmission man: soon after being high school sweethearts, from this union we have Phillip, Felecia, Phyllis and Alex. Vernell was a devoted mother that nurtured and cared for her husband, all four children and a niece Catherine Floyd whom she loved as one of own.
Vernell was raised in the church and gave her life to the Lord at the age of 12. In elementary school at a tent revival. She said the “Holy Ghost” jumped on her before she even knew what happened, and faithfully attended Greater Beulah the majority of her adult life as active member of the mass choir and would lead a son whenever called upon. She also was apart of a Missionary Society, known as the Spinks Circle.
Vernell is survived by her husband of 57 years J.L. Patterson; two daughters: Felecia (Ray) Thompson of Headland, Alabama and Phyllis Gaydon of Gainesville, Florida; two sons: Phillip Patterson and Alex (Ashanti) Patterson both of Dothan, Alabama; a devoted niece: Catherine Floyd; eight sisters Merl “Mary” Scott, of Piscataway, NJ, Willeena (Rudloph) Thomas of Montgomery, AL Annie (Thomas) Daniel of Ellenwood, GA, Maggie Gochett of Atlanta, GA, Lille (John) Cliattm of Stockbridge, GA, Inez Lewis, of Smouha, GA, Inester (Salvodore) Jones; six brothers: Richard Lightner of Acadia, FL, Laug (Elaine) Floyd of Clopton, AL, George Floyd of Detroit, MI, James Floyd of Ellenwood, GA, Roy Floyd of Atlanta, GA, Frank (Barbara) Floyd of Detroit, MI, James Floyd of Ellenwood, GA, Frank (Barbara) Floyd of Farmington, MI; grandchildren: Rachel (Tyler) Johnson of Atlanta, GA, Joshua Gaydon of Gainesville, FL, Issac Thompson of Augusta, GA, Ariaha Gaydon of St. Louis, MO, Sebastin Patterson of Dothan, AL; great grandchildren: Tyler Johnson and Nicholas Johnson of Dothan, AL, Drew Ellis Johnson; special friends: Sandra Griggs, Barbara Koonce, Brenda Baliey, Patricia Walker and Dorothy Neal; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.
