Vera Lynn Smith, a beacon of love, faith, and unwavering spirit, completed her earthly journey on July 20, 2024, in the town where her story began, Gordon, Alabama. Born to Walter Lee and Christine Thomas Smith on May 3, 1962, Vera’s life was a testament to her foundational belief that "The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well," as Ralph Waldo Emerson so eloquently stated.
Vera’s formative years in Gordon laid the groundwork for a life characterized by service and excellence. After graduating from Ashford High School, she pursued higher education at Alabama State University, where she earned a B.S. Degree in Elementary Education. This degree was not just a testament to her academic prowess but a stepping stone to her true calling - nurturing young minds. For over two decades, Vera’s dedication to education shone brightly as she shaped futures at Webb Elementary School and Rehobeth Elementary School.
Her service extended beyond the classroom. Vera's heart for her community was evident in her tenure on the Gordon Town Timeless in her commitment to the town of Gordon; Vera served on its Town Council for 24 years and played a pivotal role in the lives of its senior citizens as the Senior Citizen Coordinator. In 2023, her tireless efforts were recognized with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Alabama Senior Citizens Hall of Fame, a testament to her lifelong dedication to serving others.
Vera's faith was the cornerstone of her existence. Embracing Christ early, she poured her love into Saint Mary Missionary Baptist Church. As a member of the Church Finance Committee, Youth Department Director, Food Committee Chair, Choir member, and more, she embodied the love and teachings of her Savior. Vera also extended her impact through her leadership roles with the Saint Mary District Matrons and the Order of Eastern Star Melodious Chapter #107. Her commitment to her faith communities was a source of inspiration and a reflection of her deep-seated belief in service.
Vera's energy and enthusiasm for life were infectious, and her radiant smile was a symbol of the joy she found in meaningful connection with others. She was a sister, an aunt, a niece, and a friend - an unforgettable presence in the lives of those she touched.
She was preceded in death by her father: Walter Lee Smith and her mother: Christine Thomas Smith.
She leaves to cherish her memory with her sister: Margie Nell Thomas (Vernon) Williams, and her aunt: Bettye (Mose) McGriff, along with a host of other relatives and friends, will forever treasure the precious memories of Vera's loving spirit.
Her legacy is not measured in the years she spent on this earth but in the countless moments of joy, empowerment, and love that she imparted to those around her.
