Mrs. Velma McCoy, age 78, of Dothan, Alabama passed away Saturday, January 16, 2021.
Drive through visitation will be Saturday, January 23, 2021 from 3 PM to 5 PM at the funeral home.
Velma was born on April 20, 1942, in Ashford, Alabama, to Robert and Annie Mae Long. She moved from Ashford to New Jersey, where she attended New Jersey College of Medicine and Dentistry and Rutgers University. She worked in medical labs as a medical technologist and loved the sciences and chemistry. Velma moved back home to Ashford, in the 70s, reunited and married childhood friend: Earnest McCoy in 1981, and they raised their only daughter: Velesia Hinch.
Besides science, Velma loved to read, dance and listen to music. She was a very giving, compassionate, courageous, and strong willed woman. With her notable courage, strength, and realistic view of the world, there was never a dull moment with her. She always had valuable jewels of knowledge to share.
On Saturday, January 16, 2021, Velma McCoy, loving wife, and mother of one daughter, passed away at the age of 78.
Velma was preceded in death by her father: Robert Long; mother: Annie Mae Long; brothers: John Long, Alton Long and Theodore Long; and one sister: Marva Ashley.
She is survived by her husband Earnest; daughter: Velesia; grandchildren: Khaiya, Zaire, Azari'el, and Netjer and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
