Chairman Joe Murry was born June 7, 1928. He was one of thirteen siblings born to the late Olice and Johnnie Murry. He departed this life, early in the morning, on May 18, 2020, to rest from his suffering to be forever with the Lord. "We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord..." 2 Corinthians 5:8
He confessed Christ at an early age and united with the love of his life, Josephine Murry. To this union, five children were born. Two of his beloved daughters preceded him in death: Peggy Perry and Joann Price. The following brothers and sisters preceded him in death: William Murry, Rosa Murry, Georgia Murry, Thelma Reid, Willie C. Murry, Mary Jane Wheeler, Ida March, Martha Murry and Sarah Northern.
He was educated at Geneva County School in Slocomb, Alabama. He worked diligently supporting his family and the church. He was a preacher that was faithful to his churches, church families, the Samson District, Alabama Second Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction and his community. He stood tall in his community, and the people looked up to him because of his commitment to the Lord.
He served faithfully as pastor for over 61 years at New Hope Temple and Ming's Temple Churches of God in Christ. He served as Superintendent of the Samson District for 44 years. He served as the First Administrative Assistant for 14 years under Bishop Wesley S. Harris. He became Special Advisor to Bishop Philip A. Gardner, Sr. He served faithfully until his illness would not allow him to continue to work in those positions. Elder Gregory Dempsey always recognized Chairman Murry as being the pastor of New Holy Temple Church of God in Christ and for being a faithful and dedicated servant until his call to come home.
He leaves to celebrate and cherish the memories of his life: two daughters: Margie (Willie) Flowers of Atlanta, Georgia and Tina Weatherspoon of Dothan, Alabama; one son: Olice (Mary) Murry of Dothan, Alabama; 18 grandchildren; a host of great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; two sisters: Sister Pinnie Hunter of Panama City, Florida and Mother France Burton of Dothan, Alabama (a very dedicated, devoted and loving caretaker); Elder Tyrone People (a special son in the Gospel); a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, friends and a loving congregation.
