Sarah Rebekah Hogans Reynolds was born on October 23, 1941, in Abbeville, Alabama. She was the second of seven children of Reverend Mack Cleveland and Gertrude Kirkland Hogans. Her parents preceded her in death.
Sarah grew up in a loving family home, and at an early age joined Rocky Mount Baptist Church-the historical Hogans Family Church-in Abbeville. Later, she joined Cedar Grove Baptist Church, Abbeville, where her father was Pastor, and where she was active in the church choir and served as an usher. After Sarah married, she moved her membership and joined her husband’s family church, Center Baptist Church in Newville, where she remained a faithful member. At Center, she was a Deaconess and member of the church’s Courtesy Committee.
Sarah attended and completed Abbeville Junior High School. She graduated from high school at the Henry County Training School, Abbeville, in the class of 1959. Sarah then enrolled and attended Alabama A&M in Huntsville, before continuing her academic training at Wenonah State Technical Institute in Birmingham, where she focused on fashion-clothing and tailoring.
After completing her coursework at Wenonah, Sarah became a tailor at Blumberg’s Department Store, the largest fine clothing and full-line department store in Dothan at the time. Eventually Sarah worked at WestPoint Pepperell textile operations in Abbeville, where she remained until her retirement in 2007.
After her retirement Sarah was active with the Henry County Senior Center, Newville and was a frequent visitor to the Center and participated in and occasionally led some of their many structured programs. Sarah’s favorite pastime was crocheting and knitting, and she would often give her creative crochet pieces as gifts to her family members and friends. For several years Sarah served as a care giver for her older sister and others from the community during their illness.
Sarah was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years in 2007, Jackie (JD) Reynolds. Two siblings preceded Sarah in death, her younger brother Walter Jim Hogans (1969), and her oldest sister Teresa Hogans Farmer (2022).
Sarah leaves loved ones to cherish her memory: daughters, Joyce Reynolds Carroll and Pamela Reynolds Mills, both residents of Newville; son-in-law, James Mills, Newville; grandchildren, Kimberly Carroll, Joyquella Carroll, both from Newville, and Jennifer Mills, Dothan; great grandchildren Kyson Mills, Dothan and Charity Temmis, Newville; siblings, Joe C. Hogans, Newville, Anna Hogans Wright, Atlanta, GA, Mack L. Hogans (Anastasia), Kirkland, WA, and Andrew V. Hogans, Atlanta, GA; Sisters-in-Law, Annie E. May, Newville, and Barbara Wesley Hogans, Tuskegee; nieces and nephews, Monica Farmer Cox, Pickerington, OH, DeAnna Wright Edmonds, Naples, FL, Nykia Wright, Chicago, IL, Jonathan Wright, Atlanta GA, Joseph Hogans, Atlanta, GA, Makiah Hogans Richards, Kirkland, WA and Jarrett Hogans, Graham, WA; numerous nieces and nephews related to Sarah through Reynold's side of the family; and a host of other relatives and friends.
