Ruby J. Grider Starks, affectionately known as "Miss Ruby," was a beacon of love and faith in her community. Born on January 12, 1937, in Pike County, Alabama, she embarked on a journey that would leave indelible marks of kindness, spirit, and devotion in the hearts of those she touched. On September 5, 2024, Miss Ruby's earthly chapter closed in Dothan, Alabama, but her legacy endures, as vivid and nurturing as ever.
Miss Ruby was the cherished daughter of the late J.P. and Mildred (Hollis) Grider. She grew up surrounded by the love of her siblings, and though she bid farewell to her sisters: Gladys Myhand, Helen Walker, and Pearl Starks before her, the bonds of family always remained at the core of her being.
Miss Ruby's life was a symphony of service and devotion, not only to her family but to her community. For 33 years, she dedicated herself to the residents of Wesley Manor Nursing Home, located in Dothan, Alabama where she worked until her well-deserved retirement. Her commitment to those in her care was a reflection of her faith-filled life, which found its home at Saint Mathis Baptist Church. There, she was not just a member but a pillar, a guiding light that shone through her every action and interaction.
To describe Miss Ruby is to speak of love personified. She was a spirited woman whose faith was as firm as the ground beneath her feet and as expansive as the sky above. Her spirit was a force, one that could uplift and heal, bringing solace and strength to those fortunate enough to be within her orbit. She was the kind of person who never turned anyone away, whose door and heart were always open, ready to offer a kind word or a comforting embrace.
Miss Ruby was a God-fearing woman whose life was a testament to her beliefs. She walked in faith, and her footsteps were teachings in grace and resilience. She was a source of motivation, not just through her words but through the example she set every day. Her life was a lesson in unwavering commitment to one's values and the power of a loving heart.
She was the heart and hearth of her family, a mother extraordinaire to her sons: Willie T. (Vera) Starks and James Starks of Dothan, Alabama, and her daughters, Peggy Collins, also of Dothan, Annie Starks (Robert) Dell of Florida, and Tyshera (Devin) Grider of Ozark, Alabama. Her love extended to her grandsons: Brandon Neil Starks, Jonathan Dell, and Robert Dell, III, who will carry forward her lessons of compassion and courage. Miss Ruby's five sisters and two brothers, along with a host of loving nieces and nephews, also survive her, each a testament to her nurturing spirit.
Today, as we reflect on the life of Ruby J. Grider Starks, we are reminded of the incredible impact one person can have. She was a loving mother, a cherished sister, a treasured friend, and a valued member of her community. Her presence was a gift, and her memory will continue to inspire and guide us. Miss Ruby's spirit will forever be woven into the fabric of the lives she touched.
As we honor her memory, let us carry forward the light of Miss Ruby's love. Let us embrace each day with the same spirited joy she shared so generously. In doing so, we celebrate her life not just in words, but in the way we live our own lives, with love, faith, and an unyielding spirit that can never be extinguished. Miss Ruby, your journey continues in every life you've touched, and for that, we are eternally grateful.
