Raymond Charles Koonce

Raymond Charles Koonce, affectionately known as “Yard Man,” was born on July 1, 1949, in Dothan, Alabama, and passed away on June 22, 2026, just days before his 77th birthday.

He was born to Jessie B. Koonce and Ruthie Lee Koonce and lived a life that reflected both the lessons of his early years and the grace he embraced later in life. As a youth, Raymond experienced seasons of turmoil, but after accepting God’s grace, he became a man whose life was marked by kindness, generosity, and unwavering loyalty. He used the experiences of his past as a cautionary tale for others, and he often shared his testimony in a way that encouraged those around him to live with purpose and faith.

Raymond was a devoted friend to many and never met a stranger. He had a warm spirit and a giving heart, and he was always willing to lend a helping hand whenever it was needed. Whether he was offering words of encouragement, showing up in a time of need, or simply sharing a conversation, he made people feel seen and valued. His presence brought comfort to many, and his genuine care for others left a lasting impression on all who knew him.

He found great joy in the outdoors, and fishing was one of his favorite pastimes. Those quiet moments gave him peace and reflection, and they remained a cherished part of his life throughout the years. Raymond also became well known in his neighborhood as the “Yard Man,” a title he wore with pride. He took great satisfaction in maintaining beautiful outdoor spaces, and his strong work ethic, attention to detail, and willingness to serve others became hallmarks of his character in his later life.

Raymond was preceded in death by his wife - Carrie Koonce; his parents: Jessie B. Koonce and Ruthie Lee Koonce; son - Anthony Koonce; as well as his brother - Tony Koonce. Though their absence was deeply felt, the love he shared with them remained an important part of his life and memory.

He leaves to cherish his memory with his children - both biological and spiritual: Allison Hamilton (Dennis), Sonja Koonce, Raymond Lowe, Kienda (Jason) Hinton, Consuela Holman, Lashonda Lowe, Cassandra Simpson; his siblings: David (Mina) Koonce, LC Koonce, Wanda (BC) George, Barbara Bulger, and Patricia (Joseph) Kyles. Raymond held a particularly special place in the hearts of his nieces and nephews, who lovingly knew him as Uncle Raymond. They, along with many friends, including - Maurice Hunter and James Robinson, will forever cherish his memory.

As we celebrate Raymond’s life, we find comfort in knowing that his journey on this earth was marked by love. His memory will remain forever in our hearts, and the impact of his life will continue to be felt by all who were blessed to know him. Those we love do not go away. They walk beside us every day. Unseen, unheard, but always with us.
