Peter Blythers, Jr. Life and Times

Peter Blythers, Jr. passed away peacefully on May 27, 2024, in Brooklyn, New York, at the age of 76. Born on November 7, 1947, in Dothan, Alabama, Peter was a beacon of strength and joy to everyone who knew him. The cherished son of the late Peter Blythers Sr. and Mary Blythers, Peter grew up in a bustling household as one of seven siblings, where he learned the values of family and hard work early on.

After graduating from Carver High School in 1965, Peter ventured to New York to start a new chapter with his sister Betty. His commitment to service led him to be drafted into the army at eighteen (18), where he served for two years. Peter continued his dedication as a Reservist for twenty (20) years, retiring with honor as a Master Sergeant. Upon returning to civilian life, Peter built a commendable career with NYC transit, beginning as a station clerk and retiring as a train operator after more than twenty-six (26) years of faithful service.

Peter's work ethic was matched by his involvement in the masonic fraternity, Keystone Lodge #8, where he held several esteemed positions, including Worship Master of his lodge. He served as Sir Ambassador for the Supreme Lady Knights, Supreme Royal King in the Meridian Royal Ladies Palace, and Supreme Deputy of Meridian Grand Consistory. His love for the Masonic community was profound and unwavering, and he left an indelible mark on the fraternity.

Beyond his formal roles, Peter was a father figure to Terrance Russell and a doting "grandpa" to Tyriq Russell. He extended his paternal warmth to Shaun, Richard, Regina, and Jackie, embracing them as part of his family. Peter's ability to make each person feel special and loved was one of his most remarkable qualities.

Peter's formative years in Dothan were filled with love and laughter, surrounded by his family. He is survived by his two sisters: Betty Redding of Dothan, Alabama, and Arnell Trotter; his brothers: Isaac (Melody), Glen, and David; his special nephew: Reggie; and a multitude of nieces, nephews, and cousins. His lifelong friend Janice Mann, good friends: William Wade, Will Brown, and his church family, neighbors, and dear friends will also hold his memory in their hearts.

As he walked through life, Peter carried with him the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson, "To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children... to leave the world a bit better... to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded." Peter indeed succeeded by this measure, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, integrity, and generosity.

Peter Blythers, Jr.'s journey through life was marked by his unwavering spirit and the deep bonds he forged. His laughter, wisdom, and compassion will be profoundly missed by all who were fortunate enough to cross paths with him. As we bid farewell to this remarkable man, we take solace in the countless memories and the positive impact he made on each of our lives. Peter's legacy will continue to inspire and guide us, just as the brightest stars continue to shine long after they have gone.
