Patricia Carter Life and Times

Patricia Hicks Carter, affectionately known as Kookie, graced this world with her presence on November 24, 1957, in Cleveland, Ohio. Born to the late Spurlin Bruner and the late Mary Hicks, she was a beacon of light and joy to all who knew her. Kookie's early confession of faith and membership at Wayman Chapel AME Church in Union Springs set the foundation for a life filled with spiritual devotion and musical expression, as she lifted her voice in the church choir.

Kookie's love for music extended beyond her spiritual practice; she was a talented saxophonist and pianist, sharing her passion and talent with many. Her educational journey began in the Bullock County School System, culminating in her graduation from Bullock County High School in 1975. She carried her thirst for knowledge and growth to Tuskegee Institute, now known as Tuskegee University, where she furthered her education and prepared for a future bright with possibilities.

On Valentine's Day of 1975, Kookie's life was beautifully entwined with that of James E. Carter as they united in holy matrimony. Their love blossomed with the birth of their devoted daughter, Chasity, who would become one of Kookie's greatest joys.

Kookie's earthly journey came to a peaceful close on April 10, 2025, in Pensacola, FL, where she was surrounded by the warmth of her loving family at HCA Florida West Hospital. Her departure was preceded by the loss of her beloved parents, her sister Ruby Lee Allen, her nephew David Wilson, and her niece Linda Nickerson.

The legacy of Kookie's vibrant spirit and enduring love lives on through her cherished daughter, Chasity Carter of Montgomery, AL; her adored grandson, Ane'Quay Pitts of Huntsville, AL; and her sister, Holly Tanton of Decatur, AL. Her memory will be forever treasured by her uncles and aunts, Lonneye and James E. Hicks and Betty Sullen and Ida Hough, all of Atlanta, GA. Kookie's life was rich with the close bonds she shared with her four cousins, Annie D. Jones and Rosa Hicks of Union Springs, AL, Dale Hicks Jr of Montgomery, AL, and Eddie L. (Helen) Hicks of Warner Robbins, GA, whom she regarded as siblings.

Her nieces, Barbara Hughes of Columbus, GA, Peggy Davis, Cynthia Sapp, and her nephew Darion (Janice) Allen of Phenix City, AL, will hold dear the memories of their aunt's unwavering support and love. Kookie's goddaughter, Katina M. Harper and family of Pensacola, AL, and her former spouse, James E. Carter of Union Springs, AL, join in mourning her passing while celebrating the profound impact she had on their lives.

Kookie's life was a testament to the power of love, faith, and music. Her presence was a gift to her great nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends who were all touched by her kindness, her laughter, and her unwavering commitment to her family. Her spirit will continue to resonate in the hearts of those she loved and in the melodies that she once played so beautifully.

As we bid farewell to Patricia Hicks Carter, we reflect on a life well-lived, a journey marked by devotion, artistry, and the unbreakable bonds of family.
