Mary Alice Rivers Hines, a beacon of love and strength, passed away peacefully on December 6, 2023, in Dothan, Alabama, at the Golden age of 90. Born on August 21, 1933, in the warm community of Gordon, Alabama, Mary was the cherished daughter of the late Emmanuel and Mamie McKinnon. She embraced life with grace and vigor, leaving behind a legacy of resilience and joy that will continue to inspire all who knew her.
Mary's journey through life was marked by an unwavering faith and a generous heart. She found Christ at an early age and held tightly to her beliefs, which guided her through many seasons of change. Her professional and personal endeavors took her to Florida, where she spent the majority of her life contributing to her community and forming lifelong friendships. Eventually, Mary returned to her beloved hometown of Gordon, where she continued to serve as a devoted member of the Greater Antioch Missionary Baptist Church.
Mary's life was a testament to the power of love and family. She was a loving wife to her devoted husband: Hallot Hines, Jr., and a caring mother to her adoring daughter: Marie (Leon) Gaither of Jacksonville, Florida. Her brother: Rubin (Alice Faye) McKinnon of Enterprise, Alabama, and her special niece, Renee (David) Moseley of St. Petersburg, Florida, along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends, will forever hold the memory of Mary close to their hearts.
In her passage through life, Mary was a living example of resilience and hope. She navigated the loss of her dear siblings - Willie C. Anderson, John W. McKinnon, Rosa Mae Thomas, and Lillie Mae Dixon - with a strength that buoyed those around her. Her spirit, undimmed by sorrow, shone as a guiding light for her family, illuminating a path of love and compassion.
Mary's legacy is one of boundless generosity and kindness. She touched the lives of many with her unwavering support and her ability to see the best in people. Her presence was a source of comfort and encouragement, and she believed deeply in the potential of each individual. In the words of Helen Keller, "Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement. Nothing can be done without hope and confidence." Mary embodied this sentiment, living a life full of optimism and instilling hope and confidence in everyone she met.
As we celebrate the life of Mary Alice Rivers Hines, we are reminded of the indelible impact one person can have on the world. She was more than the roles she played; she was a catalyst for change, a shoulder to lean on, and a voice of reason in times of uncertainty. Her spirit will continue to resonate in the halls of Greater Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, in the laughter of her family, and in the hearts of her friends.
Mary's departure from this earthly life is not an end but a transition to a new beginning. Her story does not conclude with her passing but continues in the lives of those she inspired. Her love, her teachings, and her memory will forever be a part of the fabric of our lives, woven into the tapestry of our shared history.
Mary Alice Rivers Hines lived a life that was full, meaningful, and rich with experiences. As we bid her farewell, we do so with gratitude for the time we shared with her and with the promise to continue her work of spreading joy and kindness. Rest in peace, dear Mary, and know that your spirit lives on, forever cherished and forever missed.
