Mary Elizabeth McGowan Wells of Zebulon, NC formerly of Union Springs, Alabama on Tuesday evening, April 30, 2024 surrounded by family singing and praising God, the Lord quietly whispered to Mary and Said, “Your labor on earth is finished,” and peacefully whiskered her away.
Mary Elizabeth McGowan Wells was born on March 27, 1938 to Herschel and Dolly (Long) McGowan in Union Springs, Alabama. She received her formal education through the Bullock County Public School system in Union Springs, Alabama.
Mary retired as a Teacher Assistant in 2002 after 26 years of dedicated service with the Wake County Public School System. Mary delighted in cooking, being hospitable, and fellowshipping with friends at the Senior Center. Nothing delighted her more than spending time with her family and close friends.
Mary’s greatest joy came from serving God and others. She was a faithful and devoted member of Wendell First Baptist Church in Wendell, North Carolina for over 50 years. She also served as a Trustee until her health began to decline. Mary served the community as a volunteer for Merals on Wheels of Wake County and for the Helping Hands Mission of Wendell, North Carolina.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents and son, Booker Tyrone Wells, Jr.
She leaves to cherish her memory to three daughters, Debra Wells of Raleigh, North Carolina, Toni Wells of Garner, North Carolina and Stephanie Woods and husband Charlie of Wendell, North Carolina; four grandsons: Myron “Rod” Wells and wife Lisa of Mebane, North Carolina, Ricky Wells-Nelson of Vancouver, Washington, Larry Neal II and wife Cherrell of Clayton, North and DeAndre Wilson of Raleigh, North Carolina; one granddaughter: Keisha Lynn Wells; twelve great grandchildren: Tahjai, Kiara, Jazilyn, Ricky Jr., Marcus, Leila, Kai, Nyla, Meila, Reign, Aulani and Kaulani; a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.
