Mae Ella Fleming Mitchell's radiant journey through life began on November 29, 1936, in the warm embrace of Houston County, Alabama, and gracefully concluded on October 14, 2024, in Dothan, Alabama. Her life was a testament to the power of love, faith, and resilience. Mae Ella was the cherished daughter of the late Major Fleming, Sr. and Lottie C. Redding Fleming, a lineage that instilled in her the virtues of strength and compassion.
As the seasons of her life evolved, Mae Ella found her lifelong partner in the late James Mitchell, with whom she built a legacy of love and commitment. From their blessed union, they welcomed their son, Dennis Hamlin Mitchell, who would continue to carry the torch of their family's values.
Mae Ella's educational journey was a mosaic of determination and self-improvement. After attending the Dothan City School System, she ventured to New York City, where she earned her GED and pursued college courses, a testament to her belief in lifelong learning. Her professional path was marked by a fulfilling career with GTE, now Verizon, in New York City, from which she retired with a wealth of experiences and friendships.
Upon returning to her roots in Dothan, Mae Ella's faith illuminated her path, and she became a beacon of service at Greater Beulah Missionary Baptist Church. Her melodious voice uplifted many in the choir, and her dedication shone through her work on the Usher Board, Nursed Guild, and in Sunday School. Later, as a member of Parks Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church, she continued her service with unwavering devotion, embodying the roles of Stewardess, Usher, and Choir member with grace.
Even after retirement, Mae Ella's zest for life never waned. She engaged with her community, working part-time at MacRae's and Belks Department Stores, and SpectraCare, always bringing a spark of joy and warmth to those she met.
While she was preceded in departure by her parents: Major Fleming, Sr. and Lottie C. Fleming; her siblings: Athon Sr., Lottie, Coy Sr., Major, Jr., Cleona, Eddie, Mavion, Sr., Daisy, and Euretha. Mae Ella's spirit is lovingly enshrined in the hearts of her son: Dennis Mitchell, Sr., her adored grandchildren - Nikia, Dennis Jr., and Justin Sr. - as well as her six great-grandchildren: Paige, Matthew, Mia, Justin, Jr., Leia Mae, and Leon; one sister-in-law: Dorothy V. Fleming; a special cousin-in-law: Betty Redding; several nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends - each a sparkling star in the constellation of her life.
Mae Ella was a portrait of a loving, faith-filled soul, whose presence was a comforting balm to all who knew her. Her life was a reflection of the inspiring words of Helen Keller: "The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched - they must be felt with the heart." Mae Ella not only felt with her heart but encouraged others to embrace the beauty of life with love and faith.
Her legacy is not just in the memories she leaves behind but in the lives she touched, the smiles she inspired, and the love she shared. Mae Ella Fleming Mitchell's life was a symphony of service, compassion, and unwavering faith - a melody that will resonate for generations to come. Let us honor her memory by living with the same boundless love and unshakeable faith that she exemplified every day of her remarkable life.
