Louise Thompson Life and Times

Ada Mary Louise Daniels Thompson, lovingly known as “Louise,” was born on June 6, 1922, in Columbia, Alabama. The youngest child of Judge and Emma Jane Daniels, she was raised with a spirit of strength, quick wit, compassion, and determination - qualities that would define her life for more than a century.

Louise was a woman of faith who accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior early in life. She was a faithful member of New Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Dothan, Alabama. As the Church Mother, she loved her church, her Pastor (Rev. Frye) and its congregation.

In 1950, Louise married James “Shack” Thompson, Sr., and together they welcomed four wonderful children: Anita, James, Jr., Emily, and Patricia. In addition to being a wife, mother, and church member, Louise dedicated more than 30 years of service to Flowers Hospital in Dothan, AL, working alongside Dr. Paul Flowers. Her commitment, professionalism, and grace opened doors for many who followed her. In February 2022, she was honored by WDHN during a Black History Month special for her pioneering contributions and for helping pave the way for other Black women in the medical field.

Louise was also known for making beautiful handmade quilts that showcased her talent for family tapestry that she wove with love. Those lucky enough to get them were blessed.

Beyond her work in healthcare, Louise was also instrumental in supporting her husband’s business, Shack’s Grill, a beloved establishment and cultural staple in Dothan’s historic “Baptist Bottom” district. Her presence there helped shape a legacy that became a meaningful part of the community’s history.

Louise’s influence spans five generations of family whose lives are touched by her love, her stories, and her enduring wisdom. In celebration of her 100th birthday, June 6th was declared Ada Mary Louise Thompson Day in the City of Dothan, Alabama.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James “Shack” Thompson, Sr., and her daughter, Anita Louise Thompson.

She leaves to cherish her memory:  Children: James Thompson, Jr. (Altheda), Emily Faye Mullins, and Patricia Dixon; Grandchildren: Christopher Thompson (Sharlene), Felechia Hill (Gentry), Kenyetta Thompson, Jamillah Thompson (Monique), Brittany Dixon, and Jaye Thompson; along with several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends who loved her dearly.

Louise’s life was a testimony of faith, love, perseverance, and dedication. Her legacy lives on through all who were blessed to know her. She was a great mother to many people outside her immediate family and was known for her love and sincerity.
