Juanita K. Penn

Ms. Juanita K.Penn, age 83 of Union Springs, Alabama transitioned peacefully at her daughter’s home in Montgomery, Alabama on April 16, 2021.

Visitation will be held on Friday, April 23rd from 2:00 to 6:00 pm at Allen Funeral Home, 313 Prairie Street North, Union Springs, Alabama 36089.

Celebration of Life Services and Interment will be held on Saturday, April 24, 2021 at the Wesley Garden Cemetery, County Road 177, Union Springs, Alabama 36089 at 11:00 a.m.

Due to inclement weather, the Celebration of Life Services will be held at Cornerstone A.M.E Zion Church, 2401 Cornerstone Road, Union Springs, AL 36089. Only her children and participants will be allowed; under the direction of the caring staff of Scott's Chapel Hill Mortuary "Because We Care".

All services and visitations will be conducted exercising prescribed social distancing protocols. Facial coverings for all attendees are requested.

Juanita K. Penn was born on April 24, 1937, to the late Mose Calhoun and Ola Mae Burch.  

At an early age, she confessed Christ and joined the Cornerstone A.M.E. Zion Church.  Juanita was a woman of prayer, faith, but most of all, love.  She was an example of a Godly woman, putting her faith first.

Juanita was an exceptional wife and mother.  She cared deeply for her family and neighbors.  She did this not out of obligation, but because of who she was.  She always ensured that every child, who crossed her threshold, was safe, healthy and happy.

On Friday, April 16, 2021, God sent his angel to call her soul home to glory.  She answered the call and left for her Heavenly home.

Juanita was preceded in death by her husband: James Wesley Penn, Sr.; son: Arthur Lee King; mother: Ola Mae Burch; father: Mose Calhoun; and three sisters: Mozell King, Doris Elder, and Lessie Mae Jernigan.

She leaves, to cherish her memories, children: Charles (Irene) Penn of Union Springs, Alabama, Mary (Cecil) Turpin of Hurtsboro, Alabama, James W. (Diana) Penn, Jr. of Union Springs, Alabama, Dianne (Calvin) Pritchett of Union Springs, Alabama, Linda Penn of Montgomery, Alabama, Melvin Penn of Union Springs, Alabama, Rev. Dr. Gloria Penn Taylor of Montgomery, Alabama, Michael Penn of Madison, Alabama, Melissa and Michelle Penn of Montgomery, Alabama, Gregory Penn of Atlanta, Georgia, Jennifer (Willie) Tolliver of Union Springs, Alabama, and Willie Frank (Kathy) Vann of Union Springs, Alabama; a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whom she loved dearly and reared one grandchild as her own: Tahira Penn; brothers: James (Katherine) McClain of Grand Rapids, Michigan, Thomas (Alma) Calhoun, Jr. of Union Springs, Alabama, and Robert (Susie) Calhoun of Atlanta, Georgia; sister: Linda Foster of Atlanta, Georgia; brothers-in-law: Lawrence (Jessie) Penn of Union Springs, Alabama, Joe (Brenda) Penn of Montgomery, Alabama, William (Donna) Penn of Summerville, South Carolina, and Leotis Elder of Atlanta, Georgia; sisters-in-law: Mozella Penn of Union Springs, Alabama, Ruth (Jerome) McBride of Montgomery, Alabama, Dorothy Penn of Prattville, Alabama, and Mae Nella Jenkins of Union Springs, Alabama; cousin: L.C. (Lillie Mae) Cope of Union Springs, Alabama; a special cousin: Ruth Pritchett of Fitzpatrick, Alabama; a loving caregiver: Maudie Banks; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
