John Bulger Life and Times

John L. Bulger,  a loving husband to Barbara Koonce Bulger, whom he loved deeply, devoted father, veteran, and man of strength and resilience, transitioned peacefully, resting in the presence and peace of the Lord.

John was born and raised in Gordon, Alabama, where he developed his grit, charm, and strong presence—because in his words, “I’m a stature man.” He was loved by many and known for his humor, quick wit, and unforgettable dance moves. John carried himself with a sense of class—his style and the way he dressed could give anyone a run for their money. He was the light of every room and left a lasting impression on everyone he encountered. He enjoyed spending time with family, gardening, and was known for keeping it real. Above all, he loved his wife dearly and made sure she knew it—often pulling her close for a dance, a reflection of the love they shared.

John was a man who lived life with intensity, carrying both strength and determination. His journey was not without challenges, but in his final season, he showed a will and fight that reflected his enduring spirit.

He proudly served his country in the United States Army, a commitment that reflected his courage and willingness to stand in difficult places. That same resilience carried him through life and into his final days.

John was the beloved son of Wilson and Odell Bulger, both of whom preceded him in death, along with his siblings: Bertha Bulger Teague, Joe Bulger, Odessa Bulger-Howard, James Bulger, and Mary Bulger. Their legacy lives on through him and the family they raised.

He was a father to Morocco Lewis, Steven Koonce (Vera Koonce), Tiana Patrice Clemons, and Whitney Davis, and carried a special relationship with each of them. He was also a proud grandfather to Zamarius Davis and Khloe Clemons, each of whom represents a continuation of his legacy.

Throughout his life, John was surrounded by special nephews and nieces—Josiah Whigan, JT Bulger, Antonio Anderson, Ray McGhee, Lisa Smith, Carolyn Franklin, and Sherita Baskin—as well as his wife’s sisters, Pat Kyles and Wanda George, who stood beside him, shared in his journey, and remained a steady presence through the years. Their connection was meaningful, and their place in his life will always be remembered.

He was also surrounded by a host of special friends to include: Linda Smith Harrison, Otis Leonard, Shawanna Wesley, Eddie Roy Teague, and Tracy Enfinger, whose presence and friendship added meaning and support throughout his life.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Koonce Bulger; his children and grandchildren; his sister, Bonnie Bulger Lewis; his brother, Jerry Bulger; and a host of extended family and loved ones who will carry forward his memory.

Though his journey on earth has ended, his story continues through the lives he touched, the lessons he left, and the legacy of strength, endurance, and reflection.

We find comfort in knowing that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.
