Jimmie Smith Life and Times

Jimmie Lee Smith, affectionately known as Big Jim or Jimmie Lee, was born on July 3, 1941, in the Newtown Community of Union Springs, AL, to the late Daisy Lindsey and Jim Smith. Following his mother's early passing, he was lovingly raised by his step-mother, the late Armillar Smith, alongside his father. 

Jimmie Lee peacefully transitioned at his residence in Brundidge, AL, on Thursday, March 21, 2024, at the age of 82. Commemoration of life services will be held on Saturday, March 30, 2024, 2:00 p.m., at Bullock County Career Technical Center in Union Springs, AL. Words of comfort will be delivered by Rev. Tommy Cooper, Sr., Pastor of Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church, Union Springs, AL. 

Jimmie Lee found solace in his faith early on and became a member of Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church in Union Springs. He received his education from the Bullock County School System and dedicated his working years to construction until his well-deserved retirement. Known for his joyful spirit, he delighted in creating cherished memories with family and friends. In his later years, he settled in Troy, AL, before retiring in Brundidge, AL.

Jimmie Lee was also preceded in death by his wife, Cornelias Smith; two daughters, Inell Lampley and Carlisha LaShone Thomas; one grandson, Brandon Thomas; and two brothers, Edward Smith and John Robert Smith.

Jimmie Lee leaves behind a legacy of love and fond memories cherished by his six children: Ray Smith, Columbus, GA; Richard Thomas, Troy, AL; Alex Dennis, Kala Dennis, both of Union Springs, AL; Shanika Rodgers, Lancaster, PA; and Marquie Rodgers, Brundidge, AL; sixteen grandchildren: Norlishia L. (Nicholas) Martin, Union Springs, AL; Martez Lampley, Augusta, GA; Devoris Lampley, Union Springs, AL; Kenneth (Nicole) Lampley, Aiken, SC; LaNard Lampley, Lazandria Downing, both of Union Springs, AL; Aaron Gilford, Damarcus Gilford, both of Lancaster, PA; Shi'Heem Tarver, Jar'Markis Thomas, both of Union Springs, AL; Marquia Robbins, Midway, AL; Rickeria Thomas, Union Springs, AL; Sabriyya Monday, Pericous Monday, Zayeion Monday, and Aaliyah Monday, all of Fitzpatrick, AL; a host of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; along with his sister: Angeline Owens, Troy, AL; and a large extended family of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
