James McLoyd Life and Times

Mr. James McLoyd, age 91, of Ashford, Alabama passed away Sunday, June 27, 2021.

Drive through viewing will be Friday, July 9, 2021 from 4 PM to 6 PM at the funeral home.

Funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 10, 2021 at 12 PM at United Christian Fellowship, 208 E Lafayette Street, Dothan, Alabama 36301.

Burial will immediately follow the service at Macedonia Cemetery, 211 Macedonia Church Road, Columbia, Alabama 36319.

Born to the parents of George and Hettie McLoyd, the 14th of 15 children, on May 30, 1930 in Henry County, Alabama.

At an early age, James accepted Christ, was baptized and joined Elizabeth Missionary Baptist Church in Columbia, Alabama.  James was required to leave school to assist his father with farming.  Although only having a third grade education, he became a respected, successful contractor who established his own business, Mortar Concrete, Inc.; which stood the test of time for more than 40 years.  In his past time, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and traveling.

On June 5, 1948, James married Tommie L. Crawford of Early County, Georgia.  They moved to Pansey, Alabama and later to Ashford, Alabama, where they called home.  To this union, they were blessed with ten children.  Together, Tommie and James taught, encouraged, and set the example of the importance of God, family values, and strong work ethics leading them to become successful in their own right.  He always provided for his family and so many more within their community.  He taught his sons, sons-in-law, grandsons, nephews, and many others in the community the trade of cement finishing.  James was a hardworking, serious, no nonsense man but he was also funny at times.  In every endeavor, James would say, "always get a clear understanding."

James went on to join Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church in Columbia, Alabama.  He continued to serve Christ and his church by serving as a deacon.  James also became a Mason.

James was preceded in death by his beloved wife; eight brothers, five sisters, and three children: Larry, Wanda, and Wendy.

He leaves behind to cherish his memories, seven children: Elizabeth (Moses) Wymes of Southfield, Michigan, Alfretta (Artis) Holt of Dothan ,Alabama, Benjamin McLoyd of Union Springs, Alabama, Bettye (William) Blount of Portsmouth, Virginia, Virginia (Lonnie) Brown of Statesville, North Carolina, Dennis (Lolita) McLoyd of Lithonia, Georgia, and Terrence (Ramona) of Wicksburg, Alabama; one sister: Ruth Sampson of Rockledge, Florida; 14 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, and three great great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was loved by many and will be missed by all.
