Mother Hettie Ree Grice She was born October 7, 1912 in Abbeville, Alabama to the late Alonso Pole Crawford and Anna Malone Crawford. Although she lost her mother at the tender age of two, Mamie Grimsley Crawford, her stepmother, raised her to be a God fearing, strong, resilient, loving woman. Mother Grice was one of thirteen children.
Mother Grice was a devout Christian. She joined Church of God in Christ No.1 in 1922 where she was baptized and filled with the Holy Ghost under the leadership of Bishop R.L. Williams. Mother held the office of assistant Sunday school teacher to Sister Jessie Lee Hawkins. She also served as pastor aid and bible band president. Two of her favorite bible scriptures were John 14:6 and Hebrews 13:5. Her favorite song was “Take me through dear Lord”.
On February 15, 1930, Mother Hettie Ree Grice was United in holy matrimony to her first love, George Carter. To this union, ten children were born. After the passing of the late George Carter, Mother Grice remarried in June 1977 to the late Deacon Herbert Grice where she became stepmother to his six children. Mother Hettie Ree Grice was a servant to her Lord and savior, Jesus Christ. He was her strength, the leader of her life.
She was preceded in death by her parents; six children: Georgia Ree (Bracey) Barrett, Emma (Jacob) Grant, Frank (Lorene) Carter, Lilly Pearl (Samuel) Harris, Henry C. Carter, Lula Mae George; eight sisters: Minnie Mae Crawford McSwain, Pinkie Bell Crawford Newsome, Lula Crawford Grimsley, Mary Lee Crawford Davis, Dora Crawford Lynn, Mary Thomas Weems, Ella Mae Castor Hill and Ozie Lee Crawford Palmer; four brothers: Johnny Lee Crawford, Walter Crawford, Samuel Crawford and William Charles Crawford.
She leaves to cherish her memories her children: Annie Lois Brooks, Bobby Carter and John Henry (Shelia) Carter. Mother had thirty-five grandchildren, generations of great grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, a church family and friends who loved her so much.
