Gregory Curry Life and Times

Gregory Joe Curry aka “Ballou”, a beacon of creativity and compassion, departed this world on February 7, 2025, at the age of 61 with his family by his side in Charlotte, NC  to be with his Lord savior Jesus Christ.

Born in Donalsonville, GA, on August 4, 1963, to Joe Curry and the late Johnny Louise Thomas Cobb, he was a cherished soul whose light shone brightly in the lives of those he touched. Gregory's journey began in the warmth of southern hospitality and led him to leave an indelible mark in Dothan, Alabama.

From the tender shoots of his early years, Gregory's artistic talent was evident. His first-grade teacher was the initial witness to his extraordinary gift, which blossomed as he matured. He honed his skills at the prestigious Pittsburgh Art Institute in Pennsylvania, where his passion for art, particularly the natural world and its avian wonders, was celebrated and refined. His faith was a cornerstone of his existence, having embraced the teachings of Jesus Christ from a young age, which guided him throughout his life.

Professionally, Gregory dedicated eight fulfilling years to Sleep Number as a salesman, a role he excelled in until his health began to falter. Despite the challenges he faced, Gregory's zest for life was undiminished. And celebrated for his portraits by many. His personal hobbies were a reflection of his vibrant spirit; he was a connoisseur of cinema, a melodious gospel singer, and a culinary artist whose lasagna, shrimp scampi, lamb dishes, and pies were the stuff of legend. The family moved to Utica, NY in 1965 where Greg was only 3 years old and spent most of his adult life. He attended and graduated from Utica Free Academy in Utica, New York known by many in Utica. His travels took him from the bustling streets of New York to the serene landscapes of Stockholm, Sweden, enriching his life with diverse experiences and friendships. He was a beacon of life to all those who knew him from abroad.

Gregory was a mentor and a source of solace to many, known for his sharp intellect and the gentle kindness of his heart. He was a peacemaker, one who opened his doors and his heart to all. His relocation from Boca Raton back to his roots was a testament to his devotion, as he cared for his beloved mother, the prize of his  life. The holidays, especially Christmas, were a time of joy and togetherness for Gregory. He would gather the children of the family—his cherished nieces and nephews—at his home, showering them with love and attention. There was nothing he wouldn't do for them, and his generosity knew no bounds.

Gregory was a man of faith, actively involved in the St. James AME Church and Metropolitan Church in Utica, NY, and he also attended services in Columbia, Alabama, among multiple congregations. His spiritual journey was enriched by the fellowship and teachings he found within these church communities.

Preceded in death by his mother: Johnny Louise Thomas Cobb, his step-father: Isaiah E. Conway whom raised him; two nieces Mia G. Curry and Brittany N. Holliman, a nephew Quinton Curry, and his grandparents Charlie and Coddie Thomas, Gregory's legacy is carried on by his loving family.

He leaves behind his father: Joe  Curry of Gordon, Alabama; his beloved sisters: Debra A. Perez and Sherondia M. Morgan of Charlotte, NC, and his brothers Donald J. Curry of Dothan, AL, Ricky Curry of Charlotte, NC, Randall K. Conway of Rome, NY, and Brian E. Conway of Utica, NY. His life was further enriched by his cousin Harold Thomas, Renae Kelly of Dothan, AL; and his special friends Timothy Morris of Utica, NY, and Mr. George Anderson of Concord, North, Carolina; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.
