Glory Holmes Life and Times

Who can find a virtuous woman? Honor her for all that her hands have done and let her works bring praise at the city gate.

Glory Lynn Holmes, a beacon of unwavering faith and boundless love, departed from this earthly realm on January 28, 2024, in Dothan, Alabama, after a life rich with laughter, service, and devotion. Born on April 11, 1948, in Abbeville, Alabama, Glory was a radiant light to all who knew her, embodying the very essence of her name throughout her 75 years of life.

From the moment Glory accepted Christ at an early age at Mary Magdalene Baptist Church in her hometown of Abbeville, she remained a steadfast and faithful member. Her spiritual foundation was the bedrock upon which she built her life, guiding her through each chapter with grace and strength.

Glory's educational journey began in the public schools of Abbeville and culminated with her graduation from Carver High School in 1966. Her thirst for knowledge and desire to serve others led her to Alabama State University, where she studied Social Sciences, laying the foundation for her remarkable career.

In pursuit of her professional dreams, Glory moved to New Jersey and began working for New Jersey Bell. Her career path then led her to the University of Medicine & Dentistry, where she became a Medical Records Supervisor. Glory's dedication to serving those who served our country was evident in her role at the Department of Veteran Affairs at the Lyons VA Hospital, from which she retired, leaving behind a legacy of compassion and excellence.

In 1969, Glory's heart found its match in Fredy Holmes. Their love blossomed into a beautiful marriage that spanned five decades, filled with shared joys and triumphs. After Fredy's passing, Glory's love and longing led her to reunite with him in heaven, a testament to their inseparable bond. Together, they had created a home in Abbeville that was a sanctuary of warmth and welcome, mirroring the generosity and care Glory extended to everyone she met.

She was preceded in death by her sister-in-law: Lula Lynn, brother-in-law: Willie Lynn, and W.C. Hawkins. Glory's legacy of love lives on through her children: Kimberly (Jerome) Carter, Sean, and Rockeem Holmes; her treasured granddaughter: LaShonda D. (Milton) Brown; and her adored great-grandchildren: Alicia, Jaylen, Antonio, and Promise Brown. Her sisters: Essie (Tony) Stephens, Earnestine (James) Pattman: her brothers: Donald Lynn, Denore (Gwendolyn) Lynn and Jeffery (Gloria) Lynn; sisters-in-law: Vinetta Lynn, Mamie Hawkins; brothers-in-laws: Clarence (Erma) Holmes, and Arthur (Shirley) Holmes, along with a multitude of nieces - nephews and her special friends: Tracia Allen, Maggie  Bulger, Henry Hamilton, Jr.,  Kathy Lawrence, Marie (Will)  Holmes, and Vinetta Whatley will also hold dear the memories of Glory's unwavering love and kindness.

Glory's life was a testament to the power of joy and service. Her laugh, known to brighten any room, was a reflection of the joy she found in life and shared generously with others. She was a phenomenal woman of God, a devout caretaker whose selfless acts and sacrifices appeared effortless, embodying the words of Maya Angelou, "I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel."

Those who knew Glory would describe her as a loving, faith-filled soul whose presence was a gift to all. Her interests and associations were diverse, yet they all shared a common thread of her desire to uplift and support her community and loved ones.

  As we bid farewell to Glory Lynn Holmes, we do so with hearts full of gratitude for the time we were blessed to share with her. Her spirit, characterized by a profound love and unwavering faith, will continue to guide and inspire us. Glory's life was a beautiful tapestry woven with the threads of kindness, laughter, and an unshakeable belief in the goodness of humanity. She will be profoundly missed, yet her legacy will forever remain a guiding light for all who were touched by her extraordinary life.
