Gloria Jean Brookins was born September 9, 1952. She was the youngest girl of the nine children born to the late Will Craig Sr. and Willie Jewel White.
Gloria spent her life surrounded by her close-knit family and a community she loved. Growing up, Gloria always hung with her brothers, and they treated her like one of the boys. She was a long-time member of Countyline Missionary Baptist Church; it was there she grew her faith and “designed a life she loved”.
Gloria attended Geneva County Training school and later graduated from Slocomb High School. Most of her career was in manufacturing at Sony Electronics and then as a caregiver with Charlie & Harri Anne Smith.
On July 18, 1970, Gloria was joined in marriage to her grade school boyfriend Joe Brookins and was blessed with three beautiful children.
Gloria was often found doing the things she enjoyed with her best friends…drinking coffee on her front porch or having breakfast with Uncle Wilbert, taking a walk with Reverend Bouiye, shopping with her niece Barbara, or on a phone call with Sheila ‘Tootsie’.
Gloria carved out a unique life for herself and she enjoyed life on her terms. She was affectionately known to those close to her as ‘Goot’ or ‘Phoebe’. Goot was very loving, charismatic and eclectic, always wanting pockets on her pants or skirts.
She will be deeply missed.
Preceding Gloria in death are her parents, Will Craig Sr. and Willie Jewel White, her daughter Sonya Tyese Brookins, and her siblings Frank Craig, Ann Bradham McRiney, Charles Craig, Cardell Craig, Mary Craig Ardis, and Will Craig Jr.
She leaves to cherish her memories her beloved daughter, Tonya Rivers Puckett (Robert) and her son President Jonathan Brookins (Fabanie) of Jacksonville, FL., her grandchildren, Tyler Barrington Rivers, Emmanuel Bryce Rivers, Darnell Brookins, and Zoie Brookins, her greatgrandchildren, Jeremiah Rivers and Omari Rivers, her loving siblings, Fannie Huff, Edna Anglin, and Joe Earl “Bo” Craig, her best friend Sheila ‘Tootsie’ Brookins and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, devoted friends, and loved ones.
