First Lady Wanda Sue Campbell Fryer, a beacon of light and a pillar of strength, ascended to her heavenly home on May 9, 2024. Born in Slocomb, Alabama, on April 26, 1956, Wanda's journey began as the daughter of the late Eloise Campbell and Robert Hickman. Throughout her 68 years, she wove a tapestry of love, service, and devotion that will forever adorn the lives of those she touched.
Wanda's life was a testament to the power of faith and love. As the cherished wife of Reverend Norman Jay Fryer, she gracefully fulfilled the role of First Lady of New Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church. Her kindness and dedication were the cornerstones of her service, uplifting and nurturing the congregation and community alike. Wanda's spirit was like a lighthouse, guiding those adrift towards the shores of compassion and community.
Wanda's educational journey, grounded at the Geneva County Training School in the Geneva County School System, blossomed into a 27-year commitment to the students of Dothan City Schools. Her retirement marked not the end of her service, but a continuation of her mission to touch lives. A devoted servant of her community, Wanda's heart was especially evident in her dedication to Dothan's Summer Feeding Program. Her tireless efforts ensured that over 2,500 residents of the Wiregrass region were nourished, not just by the meals she provided but by her boundless generosity.
Described as faith-filled, loving, and thoughtful, Wanda's character was the embodiment of inspiration. She lived by the words of Maya Angelou, "Try to be a rainbow in someone's cloud." Indeed, Wanda was that rainbow, her vibrant hues dispelling the shadows in the lives of many.
Though predeceased by her parents: Eloise Campbell and Robert Hickman; her beloved son: Marcus Eugene Andrews, her legacy is carried forward by a loving family. Wanda's memory will be cherished by her devoted husband, Reverend Norman Jay Fryer, and her loving sons, Don C. (Deanna) Andrews and Jason (April) Andrews. Her stepdaughters, Teneeshia (Michael) Carter and Aleeshia Fryer, and her beloved sister, Myra Campbell-Harris, will continue to honor her memory. Wanda's grandchildren—Kaylynn (Corin) Andrews, Qua'Jun Andrews, Indyia (Kevin) Rachel, Ivianna Andrews, Kenyatta Carter, Michael Carter, Paul Coleman, Jr., and Ladarius Carter—as well as her great-grandchildren, Adalynn Andrews and Harper Andrews, will forever be guided by her love and wisdom. Her light will shine on through the laughter and stories of her nieces and nephews.
Wanda S. Fryer's memory will live on as a source of inspiration. She demonstrated that one person's dedication and heart can indeed move mountains and feed souls. Her legacy of compassion and selfless service will continue to resonate, encouraging us all to live with purpose and to serve with love.
Wanda's story is not one of an end but a new beginning. It is a call to action for each of us to embody the virtues she lived by. To honor her memory is to embrace the spirit of giving, to uplift those around us, and to strive to be the best versions of ourselves.
In closing, let us carry Wanda's legacy forward with the words of Helen Keller in our hearts: "What we have once enjoyed we can never lose. All that we love deeply becomes a part of us." Wanda S. Campbell Fryer will forever be a part of us, her love deeply etched in our souls, her life a blueprint for making a difference in the world. Let us go forth and be the change that Wanda exemplified, for in doing so, we keep her spirit alive and thriving.
