Mr. Edward Kirkland, age 78, passed away Thursday, February 6, 2020.
Visitation will be Wednesday, February 12, 2020 from 4 PM to 6 PM at the funeral home.
Funeral service will be held on Thursday, February 13, 2020 at 11 AM at Georgette L. Scott's Memorial Chapel, 814 Headland Avenue Dothan, Alabama 36303.
Burial will immediately follow the service at Gates of Heaven Cemetery.
Mr. Edward Jefferson Kirkland was the fourth child born to the late Richard and Annie Salter Kirkland on March 11, 1941 in Houston County, Alabama.
He took his rest on Thursday, February 6, 2020 at his residence.
At an early age, Edward accepted Christ as his Savior and united with the Smithville Missionary Baptist Church Family under the pastorate of Rev. L. L. Brown.
Edward received his education in Houston County Alabama School System; attending Ashford Colored High School. After moving to Dothan, he attended Carver High School and was a graduate in the Class of 1960. After graduating, he enlisted in the United States Armed Forces.
After fulfilling a five year tour in the military, he returned home and furthered his education by attending George C. Wallace Junior College; where he received his Associate Degree in Fine Arts. He also attended Atlanta Area Technology, Georgia State University and Famous Art School.
He worked as Junior Achievement Advisor, teaching Free Enterprise System to high school youth.
He was employed at Hayes Aircraft. He was also an Insurance Salesman with Atlanta Life Insurance Company in Dothan, Alabama and later became an Internal Field Auditor, Bookkeeper and Accountant for Atlanta Life Insurance in Atlanta, Georgia.
He was a superb artist. He loved painting pastel portraits, oil paintings and drawing. He also loved creative writing (short stories, poems and philosophical editorials).
Upon moving back to Dothan, he decided to become an Entrepernuer and opened Kirk's Pro Billiard. He loved the game of pool and his multitude of friends he made over the years.
Edward was a very loving and dedicated son, brother and uncle.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers: Jay B. Kirkland and Tennyson Kirkland, Sr.; two sisters: Dorothy Hollis Roberts and Willie Ruth Hollis.
He leaves to cherish his memories: one sister: Annie Grayson Savage (Isiah) of Dothan, Alabama; 16 nieces and nephews, a host of great and great great nieces and nephews, cousins and friends. A very special friend: David Dumas.
