Edna Mae Smith was born to the late Henry Baxter and Cora Baxter on July 25, 1925.
At an early age, she joined Antioch Missionary Baptist Church in Gordan, Alabama. During that time, she joined the Eastern Star Lodge #249 and later joined the Usher board.
She owned and operated a daycare in her home in which she loved.
She was united in Holy matrimony to Elbert Melton and to that union were four children: Elbert, Betty, Eddie and Alice Melton.
Later in years; she was united with J.T. Smith, Jr. of Gordon, Alabama and no children were born to that union.
She was preceded in death by her parents: Henry and Cora Baxter; husband: J.T. Snith and Elbert Melton; five sisters: Cora (Theodore) Peterson, Earnestine (David), Christine (Fred), Pinell, and Wyvonna (Edward); brothers: Eula C., Willie C. (Lue), Arthur (Clara) and L.V. Collins.
On Friday, April 14, 2023, Edna Mae Smith departed this earthly life at Henry County Nursing Home, Abbeville, Alabama for her heavenly home.
She leaves to cherish her four children: Elbert (Jennie) Melton, Betty Melton (Larry) Butler, Eddie Melton and Alice Melton (Wilbert) Dawsey; twenty-four grandchildren, fifty-seven great-grandchildren and fifty-four great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law: Ellen Graham and Clayann; two brothers-in-law: Charles Melton and Jimmy Smith, other relatives and friends.
