Deacon Richard Hill Life and Times

Deacon Richard Godfrey Hill, a steadfast servant of God and a cherished pillar of his community - Born on August 2, 1935, in the nurturing soil of Henry County, Alabama, he was the youngest of ten siblings in the loving family of Lawson and Bertha Porter Hill. His life journey began in the close-knit communities of Edwin and Abbeville, and later moved to Dothan and married, becoming a loving father.

Deacon Hill's legacy is one of faith, hard work, and laughter. He was the embodiment of the well-known words of Albert Schweitzer, "The purpose of human life is to serve, and to show compassion and the will to help others." Deacon Hill dedicated his life to service, both to his Lord and to those around him. He was a man who found joy in the everyday and approached every task, whether sacred or mundane, with a heart full of gratitude and hands ready to work.

After a fruitful apprenticeship in carpentry under Mr. Marion Hawk, Deacon Hill honed his skills and became an esteemed independent contractor, leaving a tangible legacy of craftsmanship across the Wiregrass and Tri-State area. For over six decades, his work graced numerous homes and buildings, each project a testament to his dedication and skill. He was not only a master of his trade but also a mentor to many, generously sharing his knowledge and providing fair wages to those who sought to learn alongside him.

Deacon Hill's devotion to his faith was unwavering. He was a cornerstone in the construction of the Allen Temple Church Of God In Christ in the late 1950s and continued to serve the church faithfully for decades. Ordained as a Deacon in 2011,  he remained a faithful and active member of the church until his health began to decline in the summer of 2023. Even then, his spirit remained connected to his community of faith through the digital threads of online services.

His gentle demeanor, serious yet imbued with a humorous spark, made him a beloved figure to all who knew him. Deacon Hill's quick wit and clever jokes often brought laughter to conversations, lightening the hearts of those around him. He took immense pride in his work, always striving for excellence and radiating joy upon the completion of each job.

Beyond his professional and spiritual commitments, Deacon Hill was an avid gardener, finding solace and pleasure in the earth's bounty. His backyard was a testament to his green thumb, yielding an abundance of sugar cane, turnip greens, sweet potatoes, peaches, lemons, and muscadines that delighted the senses year after year.

Deacon Richard Godfrey Hill peacefully departed this life on June 2, 2025, at the venerable age of 89.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 39 years, Mrs. Virginia F. Hill; his son: James M. Hill, and his grandson: Marquise Y. Hill - a former player of the New England Patriots. His memory will be forever cherished by his loving family, including his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and a wide circle of friends and acquaintances who were touched by his kindness and generosity.

We remember Deacon Richard Godfrey Hill not only for the life he led but for the countless lives he enriched. His was a life well-lived, a path well-followed, and a legacy that will continue to inspire for generations to come.
