David Long Sr Life and Times

David Long, a man of honor, faith, and unwavering love for his family, passed away peacefully of natural causes on April 4, 2025, in Atlanta, Georgia. Born on January 31, 1948, in Dothan, Alabama, David was the cherished son of the late Mr. Donnie Long and Mrs. Lola Martin Long. His early years were rooted in the values of community and spirituality, as he committed his life to Christ and was an active member of the First Baptist Church in his hometown.

David's formative years were marked by a strong dedication to education and service. A proud graduate of Carver High School in Dothan, he went on to serve his country with distinction in the United States Army. His commitment to personal growth led him to further his education at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education in 1973.

The year 1968 was a significant one for David, as he married his first love, Mary Wiggins. Their loving union blessed them with one daughter, Patravious Long of Covington, Georgia, and one son David Long Jr. (Re'Con) of Atlanta, Georgia. David's family was the cornerstone of his life, and he instilled in his children the values of integrity, respect, and the importance of a strong work ethic.

After completing his initial term in the military, David re-enlisted in 1973, continuing a distinguished career as an officer. His service was recognized with numerous medals and commendations, a testament to his leadership and dedication to his country. Upon his honorable retirement from the military, David's journey came full circle as he returned to Dothan.

In Dothan, David found love again and married his devoted wife, Carolyn Burks. Their shared faith was a bedrock of their marriage, as they worshipped together at Patterson Street Freewill Baptist Church under Reverend Harold McKissic. David and Carolyn's life was a testament to their love for each other, their faith, and their community. In 2021, they moved to Covington, Georgia, where they continued to live a life of love and service until Carolyn's passing on June 19, 2022.

David's legacy is carried on by his beloved children, Patravious and David Jr., and his adored granddaughter, Kiersten Scott, who was the light of his life. His passing also leaves a void in the hearts of his loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends, who will remember him for his warmth, wisdom, and the unwavering devotion he had for his family.

An avid outdoorsman, David loved to fish and tend to his garden, where he grew an array of fruits and vegetables. He was passionate about politics, African American history, and biblical history, often engaging in spirited discussions on these topics. Golfing was a favorite pastime, and in his later years, he took up the sport of pickleball, showcasing his big personality and competitive spirit.
