Life and Times

Danny Watson Thomas affectionately called “Papa” was the cherished son of the late Charlie Watson and Ruth Martin; born on May 8, 1948, in North Carolina.

From an early age, Danny showed his commitment to his faith; accepting Christ as His Lord and Savior and becoming a devoted member of Browns Chapel Freewill Baptist Church. His love for his community was evident in his actions, always ready to lend a helping hand and ensure those around him were cared for.

His Early Education started in North Carolina, where he later relocated to Connecticut and earned his High School Diploma. Danny's thirst for knowledge continued into adulthood, evidenced by his college experiences. Throughout his life, he held a deep appreciation for education and the doors it could open.

One of Danny's greatest passions was fishing, a pastime he enjoyed immensely. Whether he was casting a line into the water or simply sitting by the shore, the tranquility of nature always brought him immense peace and joy. His love for fishing was just one facet of his larger appreciation for life's simple pleasures because his larger-than-life personality, combined with his selfless nature, made him a beloved figure to all who knew him.

Throughout his life, Danny was a beacon of love, humor, and selflessness. Always the first to offer a friendly smile or a comforting word, he made a lasting impact on everyone he met. In the words of the great poet Maya Angelou, "People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel." This quote encapsulates the essence of Danny's life, as he made everyone feel loved, valued, and important.

Danny's impact reached far beyond his immediate family. As a stalwart figure in his community, he was known for his kindness, generosity, and willingness to help others. His absence will be deeply felt, but his memory will live on in the countless lives he touched throughout his life.

He is preceded in death by his parents; grandparents and his sister: Delores Thomas.

Danny Watson Thomas, a beloved husband, father, grandfather and community pillar, finished his final earthly chapter; in the book of life at his home on July 26, 2023.

Danny was a family man through and through. He leaves his precious memories with his loving wife of twenty-three years: Mrs. Louise Thomas and their six loving children: Brandi (Jamey) Thompson of Greenville, Alabama, Joycelyn Debose of Atlanta, Georgia, Throdoshia Debose of Dothan, Alabama, Bridgette (Eric) Holston and Brenda (Jerry) Morris both of Montgomery, Alabama and Bryson Walker of Dothan, Alabama. His love and devotion to his family were evident in every aspect of his life, and his legacy will be carried forward by those who loved him most.

In addition to his immediate family, Danny is survived by his three sisters: Joyce (Johnnie) Whitaker, Patricia Martin, and Charlotte Mcgrit; his two beloved brothers: Bobby Mcgrit and Elvis Pate. His Uncle David (Geri) Smith of Maryland. He was a proud grandfather to Julian Thompson of Greenville, Alabama, Hakeem Debose, Lakeefia Debose, Stavenious Thomas, Keanna Marsh and Zamya Debose. He also leaves behind a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends who will miss him dearly along with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends whom will remember him fondly.

In remembering Danny, we celebrate a life lived with purpose, love, and a deep commitment to family and community. His legacy will continue to inspire all those who knew him, and his spirit will live on in the hearts of those who loved him. May his memory be a blessing and a source of comfort during this difficult time.
