Catherine Mathis Humphrey was born in 1939 to the late Ed Mathis and Donnie Feggins Mathis. She lived in Headland, Alabama and was the youngest of 6 children.
She was preceded in death by her siblings, Thelma, Florine, Lillian, Willie Ed, Emma and Jerry.
Catherine received Christ and joined Greater Shiloh Baptist Church at an early age. She remained faithful until she was no longer able to attend. Catherine was highly educated, graduating from Alabama State University with a B.S. degree and a Masters degree from Tuskegee Institute. She then went on to teach at Henry County Training School, Northside and Headland Middle School. She was also a member of the Henry County Board of Education. She lived a life of service to her people and community. She believed in equal rights for all and saw value in all her students. For over 20 years, she was the Funeral Director for the Peoples Funeral Home. Catherine was happily married to Willie Oscar Humphrey until his passing in 2021.Though she had no children of her own, Catherine assisted in caring for her great nephews, Brian and Cedric Thomas.
She also leaves to cherish her memories: several nieces Jeanette Mathis, Bernice Hodges (Robert), Catherine Bouldin (Willie James) Shirley Hodges, Kassandra Sherrod (James); nephews: Arthur Hodges, Melvin Hodges, Kenneth Oates, Terry Oates, Dr. Byron Cotton, Terrence Mathis and several great nieces and great nephews, cousins and friends.
