Cassandra Schanette Cogman Hammond, affectionately known as Cassandra, was a beacon of love and joy to all who knew her. Born on September 25, 1970, in Dothan, Alabama, Cassandra's journey through life was one marked by selflessness, spirited energy, and a heart that knew no bounds. On June 28, 2024, surrounded by the love of her family, Cassandra completed her earthly chapter, leaving behind a legacy of warmth and generosity that will forever illuminate the lives of those she touched.
Cassandra's story is one of deep-rooted family values and an unshakable sense of community. She was born to Creed Jr. and Vera Johnson, who instilled in her the importance of kinship and togetherness. As the cornerstone of her family, she grew up alongside her brothers, Brent and Terrace Cogman, in the nurturing embrace of Dothan's vibrant spirit. Her lineage was a proud one, preceded by her adored grandparents, Creed Sr., and Annie Lois Cogman, JP and Mildred Grider, and she honored their memory by living a life full of purpose and kindness.
Her journey through life was shared with her beloved husband, Willie Edd Hammond, whom she married in a union of true companionship on June 30, 2001. Together, they built a world filled with laughter, support, and unwavering commitment. Cassandra's role as a mother was one she cherished deeply, nurturing her children Deandre, Santanya, and her baby boy Corey "Big Bear" with an unconditional love that only a mother's heart can provide. Her five loving grandchildren were the apples of her eye, and she reveled in their achievements and milestones.
Cassandra's educational path was a testament to her determination and passion. A proud 1988 graduate of Rehobeth High School, she carried her love for sports into adulthood, spending countless days and nights cheering on her family and friends at the ball field. Her professional life was dedicated to serving others at Wesley Manor, where she worked until her health no longer permitted. Through her work, she touched the lives of many, leaving a lasting impression of compassion and dedication.
Her interests and hobbies were as vibrant as her personality. Cassandra's outgoing nature and loving smile were infectious, and she had the rare ability to light up a room simply by being present. Described by those who knew her best as loving, spirited, and selfless, she had a special bond with her nieces, nephews, and a host of cousins, relatives, and friends. To know Cassandra was to experience love in its purest form.
Cassandra's influence extended beyond her immediate circle, as she was the glue that held her family together. Her aunts and uncles, especially her "girl," Ruby J. Starks, and her cousins Stephanie Newman, Pamela Coleman, and Jennifer Cole, held a special place in her heart. The love she shared was boundless, reaching her father-in-law, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, and her sister/cousin, Sharlise "Pink" Anthony.
In every interaction, Cassandra exuded a spirit of giving and self-sacrifice. She was the epitome of someone with a "heart of gold," always placing the needs of others before her own. Her energetic spirit and loving nature were her gifts to the world, and they will continue to inspire and motivate all who were fortunate enough to be part of her story.
