Billy J. Blackmon, known affectionately as the "Bread Man," was a beacon of light and love in the Dothan, Alabama community. Born on February 4, 1946, in the very town he would leave his lasting legacy, Billy departed this world on October 4, 2024, surrounded by the love of his family and the familiar comforts of his hometown.
A man of integrity and warmth, Billy's life story is one of unwavering devotion to his loved ones and the values he held dear. He met his soulmate, Dorothy Rivers, and their blessed union was one of true partnership and mutual respect. Together, they raised four wonderful children, filling their home with laughter, guidance, and an abundance of love.
Billy was a proud alumnus of E.R. Grimsley High School's Class of 1965. It was there that he honed the morals, values, and character that would define him as a man of distinction throughout his life. His professional journey was marked by an impressive forty-year tenure at the Colonial Baking Company. His dedication, work ethic, and commitment to service were hallmarks of his career.
In retirement, Billy found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He cherished time spent with his grandchildren, and his love for fishing, hunting, gardening, and cooking out for friends and family never waned. These moments not only nurtured his spirit but also strengthened the bonds with those he held dear.
He is preceded in death by his parents: Elder Zack and Francis Blackmon; and his siblings: Tom, Tellies (Luvenia), Ralph (Lucille), Edward (Mary Ann) Blackmon, Elowese Hamilton, Elizabeth Blackmon, and Betty Blackmon. Billy's reunion with them in the hereafter is a comforting thought for those who knew and loved him.
Billy's legacy is carried on through his beloved family, including his children: Marilyn Griggs of Webb, AL, Dorothy (Alfonso) Neal of Dothan, AL, Billy Blackmon of San Diego, CA, and Jeremy Blackmon of Dothan, AL. His grandchildren: Tjuana (Anthony) Cogman, Brandi Jones, and Isaiah Neal; as well as his great-grandchildren: Darius Griggs, Malayah Jones, Kamira Nsuk, Kimora Nsuk, and great-great-grandchild, Kamauvi Griggs - will forever hold dear the memories and lessons imparted by their cherished patriarch. Billy's special bond with his devoted friend: Betty Sue Miller, her daughter Marie, and his bonus family Gwen and Barry Shiver added even more joy and companionship to his life.
As we reflect on Billy's life, we are reminded of the impact one individual can have on so many. His departure leaves an unfillable void in our hearts, yet we are comforted by the indelible memories and love that will forever be a part of us. Billy's spirit will continue to guide and inspire us, and his presence will be deeply missed.
In knowing that Billy is now with the Lord, we find solace during this time of sorrow. His life was a testament to the power of kindness, generosity, and steadfast faith. As we say our earthly goodbyes, we celebrate a life well-lived and a man who was truly one of a kind. Billy J. Blackmon will forever reside in the hearts of those who loved him, and his legacy will endure through the countless lives he touched.
