Mrs. Annie Dumas, age 80, of Dothan, Al passed away on Friday, May 08, 2020.
Public viewing of the body will be held Tuesday, May 12, 2020 one hour prior to her service at Shady Grove Baptist Church.
Graveside service will be held on Tuesday, May 12, 2020 at 1 PM at Shady Grove Cemetery.
Annie Merle Dumas was born on August 3, 1939 in Dothan, Alabama. She was the daughter of J. C. and Donnie Mae Ward.
She graduated from Carver High School. She worked at Dr. Greenfield's Office, who was the first black Doctor in Dothan, Alabama. She, then, furthered her education at Tennessee State University where she received a bachelor's degree in English Language and Literature. She was a middle school teacher, in Florida, for many years.
She married Johney Dumas on May 14, 1970 and they spent forty-nine years together. She taught high school in Germany and Alabama for many years. She also taught adult education classes in the community. After she stopped teaching, she became a home health aide and years later retired from the State of Alabama.
She accepted Christ at an early age and was a faithful member of the Shady Grove Baptist Church #1. She was President of the Usher board, Vacation Bible School Director, Secretary of Sunday School and Deaconess for twenty-five years. She was the current Treasurer of Wilson Choice #625 Eastern Star Chapter. She was a member of the Southeast Alabama Usher Union for many years. She was a member of the Ladies Aide Missionary Society #12. She was part of the woman's club called the Katie Holloway Club.
She transitioned on May 8, 2020.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters: Linnie Holt and Elma Phifer.
She leaves to cherish her memories: her husband: Johney Dumas; two children: Shakuntala Ingram and Alexander Dumas; stepson: Herbert Bowman; two honorary children: Yakemi Ward McKinnis and Kaneisha Ward; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; two brothers: Willie C. (Brenda) Ward and Minister Roger (Barbara) Ward; three sisters: Elizabeth Bryant, Mary Williams and Luretha Gatlin and a host of nieces and nephews and a close friend: Mrs. Mary Gomez.
