Alma Jean (McLoyd) Johnson was peacefully called home by our Heavenly Father at 7:18 am on Friday, January 16, 2026 at Banner Baywood Hospital in Mesa, AZ.
A dedicated soul of God, spirit-filled, baptized, born again believer in Christ, lover of life, was born on August 21, 1942 to a Christian family of Calvin McLoyd, Sr. and Ethel Cizan (Cummings) McLoyd, the third of eight children in rural Columbia, Alabama. She was greeted in glory by her husband, Rev. Dr. James L Johnson, her loving son, Bruce L. Johnson of Houston, TX and her 2 siblings - Norman McLoyd of Ashford, AL and Ethel “Pat” Lee McLoyd of Long Island City, Queens, NY.
She leaves to cherish her loving memory her caring son, Ron Johnson of Phoenix, AZ; her daughters-in-law - Keyshia (Williams) Johnson of Phoenix, AZ and Melanie (Pace) Johnson of Houston, TX; grandchildren Austin and Cameron Johnson of Houston, TX; brothers - Charles (Daisy) McLoyd of Spring Valley, NY; Rev. Calvin (Vivian) McLoyd Jr. of Cowarts, AL; Raymond McLoyd of Jamaica, NY; sisters - Hettie (McLoyd) Corker of Jamaica, NY and Annette (McLoyd) Johnson of Amityville, NY; a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, God-children, sorority sisters and friends.
Mrs. Johnson was united in Holy Matrimony to her soul mate and best friend, Rev. Dr. James L. Johnson on June 19, 1964 in New York City, NY. They were blessed with two loving sons, the late Bruce Lawrence Johnson and Ron James Johnson.
Her early education was completed at Columbia Colored High School in 1960. Destined to continue her education after high school graduation, she was accepted by Alabama A&M University, Normal/ Huntsville, Alabama to continue her education, where she received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Home Economics and History. A Master of Science Degree and Master’s Degree Certification in counseling were obtained at Troy State University. She completed additional study at Savannah State University.
She loved traveling, gardening, fishing, cooking, and going to the theater. She greatly enjoyed her retirement after teaching and counseling in Geneva County and the Dothan City School Systems for 35 years. She was active in Alabama Education Retirees Association (AERA), Houston-Dothan Education Retirees Association (HDERA), Alabama Education Association, National Education Association, Dothan Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and Alabama A&M Alumni Association.
Growth in serving the Lord continued by being actively involved in New Bethel Mission #2 (Mary Wilson Circle) as a member and teacher, New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church Choir, Resource Center Committee (Library), assistant adult Sunday School teacher, New Bethel Scholarship Committee, and Saint Mary District Ministers’ Wives President.
After the passing of the love of her life, Rev. Dr. Johnson, in November 2022, Mrs. Johnson moved to Phoenix, AZ, where she lived with her son, Ron, and her daughter-in-law, Keyshia. She was lovingly cared for by her dedicated caregivers - Joan, Phionah, Trina, Regina, Belinda and Alex. Mrs. Johnson filled her days with crafts, exercise, reading, visiting senior centers and music. She touched so many with her kind and gentle spirit, and she is deeply missed by all who came to know her in Arizona.
