Allen Wilbert Gary, a cherished son, fiancé, father, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on April 1, 2025, in Georgia, surrounded by the love of his family. Born on January 9, 1948, in Waycross, GA, to Lucille Harper Peterson and Allen Wilbert Gary, Sr., Allen was the treasured first and only child of their union. His early years in Waycross laid the foundation for a life marked by dedication, service, and a deep love for his community.
Allen's educational journey began at Center High School and continued at Harper High School in Atlanta, GA, where he proudly received his diploma. His life took a turn when he was called to serve his country in the US Army, dedicating four years to military service. Upon returning to civilian life, Allen followed in his father's footsteps, embarking on a successful career in the hospitality industry. His hard work and natural leadership skills led him to become a respected captain overseeing food services in banquet halls, including a notable tenure at the Marriott Marquis.
The warm climate and vibrant culture of Miami, Florida, eventually drew Allen southward, where he established a fulfilling life. His passion for hospitality flourished as he worked in the family food business, serving local communities. Allen's love for sports also found expression during this time, allowing him to merge his personal interests with his professional life.
In Dothan, Alabama, Allen's heart found its match in Sherri Flowers, his beloved fiancée. Together, they created a loving home, not only for themselves and Allen's best friend, Big Dog, but also for their children and grandchildren, who brought immense joy to Allen's life.
Allen's legacy is carried on by his devoted mother, Lucille Harper Peterson; his loving fiancée, Sherri Flowers; his son, Allen Gary, II; his bonus children, Antonio Thompson, Patrick Flowers, and Kristy Flowers; his siblings, Regina Luster, Sheba (D. Johnny) Glenn, Cynthia Sands, Lawrence (Sandra) Peterson, Jr., Denard (Michelle) Peterson, Thaddeus Walton, Dwight Walton, and Christopher Walton; his aunt, Diana (Harold) Swinton; his uncle, Woodrow (Gertrude) Harper; and his many nieces and nephews, including Shekelia, Shinneka, Shuawujan, Tracie, Michelle Sarah, Rhonda, Phillis, April, Shannon, TJ, Xavier, Arlington, Taurisac, Avares Larence III, Denard Jr., Darrius, Ronald, and Travis.
Allen's life was a testament to the power of love, family, and community. His warm smile, generous spirit, and unwavering commitment to those he cared for will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His memory will continue to inspire and guide us, and the impact of his life's work will be felt for generations to come.
