Alfred Freeman Life and Times

Alfred Jerome Freeman, known affectionately as Rap Brown, passed away on June 28, 2024, at Southeast Health, at the age of 71 in Dothan, Alabama. Born on September 8, 1952, in Ashford, Alabama to the late Mildred Brown and James Freeman.

Alfred's journey through life was marked by a steadfast commitment to his family, career, and service to his country. Alfred is survived by his loving wife, Benita McCray Freeman, Ashford, Alabama; his children, Lernard McCray (Tanya) Panama City, Florida, JJ Freeman (Fredisha), Tahesia Underwood (Tyreen) Crystal Powell (Derick) Ashford, Alabama. Grandchildren; Amya McCray, Dothan, Alabama, Tiana and Treazure Underwood Derrick and De'Christian Powell, and Jyi'lliannah Freeman, Ashford, Alabama. Sisters, Melinda Cleveland, Taylor, Alabama, Yvonne Brown and Mable Little, Ashford, Alabama, Brothers, Derrick Caswell (Patricia) Webb, Alabama, Maurice Brown (Kathy), and Stanley Brown (Maria) Dothan, Alabama. Mother-in-Law, Mary McCray, Ashford, Alabama. Sister-in-Laws Barbara Sanders (Jerome), Sharon Black (Michael), Dothan, Alabama, and Jacqueline Amos (Gregory); Newton; Alabama. Brother-in-Laws Ronnie McCray (Kristie), Douglas McCray, Birmingham, Alabama, Christopher McCray, Los Angeles, California, Heath McCray, Sr., Springville, Alabama, God-daughters Tabitha George, Dothan Alabama and Canecca Mayes, Ashford, Alabama. Special friends Kenny Collins, Ashford, Alabama, Emory and Michelle Mayes, Dothan, Alabama, James Earl (Ricochet) Edwards St. Petersburg, Florida along with a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents Mildred Brown and James Freeman, Brothers James Freeman, Jr., and Kenny Charles Brown, Sisters, Darlene Brown & Sandra Brown, Aunts, Annie Will Brown and Marette Brown, Uncles, Emmett Brown Jr & Herbert Brown.

Alfred's early education was at Ashford Colored Primary School, followed by his graduation from Ashford High School. After completing his education, he dedicated himself to serving his nation in the United States Army, a commitment that spoke volumes about his character and patriotism. Professionally, Alfred was a valued employee at Wise Forklift, where his diligence and work ethic were well-respected by colleagues and management alike. His commitment to excellence was evident in every task he undertook.
