Life and Times

Alberta Burks, born on December 24, 1926, in Dothan, Alabama, to the late Rose and Clarke Worthy who became the proud parents of identical twins Alberta and Roberta. Alberta was the last survivor of seven children and a proud member of a loving and close-knit family.

Alberta's faith was the cornerstone of her life. She welcomed Christ into her heart at an early age and was a dedicated member of Allen Temple Church Of God In Christ. Her service to the church included roles as Assistant Sunday School Superintendent and Church Mother. Her favorite hymn, "Just Another Day The Lord Has Kept Me," was a testament to her enduring faith and gratitude for each day.

Alberta's education was fostered within the Dothan Public School System. She later joined the workforce, dedicating over twenty-five years to South East Health Medical Center, where she served in the Dietary Department until her retirement. She was a Representative for Avon for over twenty years, displaying her commitment to hard work and community service.

Alberta found love and companionship in her husband, the late Jim Burks. Their union spanned over four decades and was blessed with eleven children. She was a devoted wife and mother, pouring her love and wisdom into her family.

Alberta was a woman of many interests and talents. She was known for her exceptional cooking skills, her sense of humor, and her willingness to lend a hand to anyone in need. She was a pillar of her community and a beacon of love and kindness to all who knew her.

Predeceasing her are her wonderful children: James Burks, James Burks, Elizabeth Burks, Frank Burks, Paul Burks and Jimmy J. Mason.

On Sunday, September 10, 2023, Mother Alberta Burks - a faithful servant, beloved mother, and cherished grandmother, finished her final earthly chapter in the book of life and was called Home for her Golden Crown.

She leaves to honor her lifelong precious memories with her three daughters: Dorothy Worthy of Rancho Cucamonga, California, Shirley A. Cleveland and Connie (Maxure) Underwood of Dothan, Alabama, two sons: David Burks of Los Angeles, California, Clinton Rhymes of Atlanta, Georgia. Her legacy lives on in her eighteen grandchildren: Brenda Buckner, Cynthia (Alphonso) Lucas, Willie (Amanda) Burks, Dorothy (Thomas) Cheeks, Michael (Marsha) Burks all of Detroit, Michigan, Renas and Alicia Mason both of Dothan, Alabama, Reginald (Jermelia) Holling of Sylmar, California, Willie Charles Holling of Rancho Cucamonga, California, Donna (Keith) Farmer of Fontana, California, Felicia (David) Register of Dothan, Alabama, Tameka (Chad) Barrington of Riverview, Florida, Casher Lewis, III of Dothan, Alabama and David Burks, Jr. of Los Angeles, California; twenty-eight great grandchildren, four great-great grandchildren; her extended family: William (Goldie) Lunsford and children of Dothan, Alabama; a special cousin: Nancy McCray; a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, church family and friends who will forever cherish her memory.

Alberta Burks was a woman of faith, love, and kindness. As Helen Keller once said, "The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched - they must be felt with the heart." Alberta's love, her faith, and her kindness were indeed the most beautiful things about her, and they were felt by everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.

Her life was a testament to the power of faith and the strength of family. While her earthly journey has ended, her spirit lives on in the hearts of those she loved and those who loved her. She will be deeply missed, but her legacy will continue to inspire and guide us. We take comfort in knowing that Alberta has gained her Golden Crown and is now at rest. May her soul rest in Eternal Peace.
