Sonya McLoyd Life and Times

Sonya MeShawn McLoyd, 45, of Steubenville, Ohio passed away on Wednesday, March 28, 2018, quietly and peacefully at her home.

She was born on Sunday, June 25, 1972, and it is true; a good, bonny and blithe child of God was born that Sabbath day. She was the daughter of the Reverend Calvin, Jr. and Lady Vivian (nee Roberson) McLoyd.

Sonya was raised to be a devout Christian by her God-fearing parents who serve the Lord our God. She truly walked the path of a faithful and  virtuous woman of God. She recently came to Steubenville, Ohio to answer a call to devote her life to helping her father with Calvary Community Baptist Church. Sonya was very active within her church and the United Baptist Conference.  She was the Administrative Assistant, Financial Secretary, Youth Director and sang with the church choir “Echoes of Calvary” within Calvary Community Baptist Church. Sonya was also an active member of the Valley Youth Network and the National Action Network, a civil rights organization, and served as the secretary of the local chapter.

She was a graduate of Johnstown High School in Johnstown, Pennsylvania and following graduation she attended the Tuskegee University in Tuskegee, Alabama. After two years, she transferred to Cleveland State University in Cleveland, Ohio and receive her Bachelor’s Degree in Education. She later received her Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Phoenix.  Currently, Sonya; a lover of education,  was studying at Franciscan University to  receive credits necessary for a State of Ohio Teaching Certification and working on her Doctorate with University of Phoenix.

Sonya was a very energetic person and liked horseback riding, especially with her favorite horse Rex; going to church events with her mother and directing the praise dance group at her church, Anointed Kids of Calvary. For down time, she enjoyed playing a few games on her computer or phone or spending time with China, her dog. She was a member of Kiwanis International a group that serves the needs of children, a passion of Sonya’s. She was also a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta, Inc.
