Laverne Russell Life and Times

Mrs. Laverne Russell passed away on June 17, 2019 from Union Springs, Alabama. Visitation for Mrs. Laverne Russell will be Friday, June 28, 2019 at Allen Funeral Home, 313 N Prairie Street, Union Springs, Alabama 36089, from 4 PM to 6 PM.  Funeral service will take place Saturday, June 29, 2019 at Mount Zion Baptist Church in Union Springs, Alabama at 11 AM.  Burial will take place immediately following the funeral at Mount Zion Baptist Church Cemetery.

 

 

Laverne Taylor Russell (Von), was born on May 26, 1949 in Hallandale, Florida to the late James H. Taylor and Geraldine McCoy Taylor.  

Laverne accepted Christ at an early age at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Hallandale Florida. She was married to the late Earnest Russell on March 7, 1976. She then joined Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church. 

Laverne received her education in Hallandale, Florida, Banning, California and Bullock County, AL. She furthered her studies at Southern Vocational College in Tuskegee, AL. She served as head teacher with The OCAP Head Start in Midway and Union Springs, AL, serving for more than 20 years. She ended her career with the Bullock County Board of Education as a Teacher’s Aide and Substitute Teacher from 1999 – 2015.

Laverne touched the lives of so many people.  She was a humanitarian in every sense of the word, always assisting anyone, and especially her elderly friends helping in any way she could. 

In addition to her parents and husband, Laverne was preceded in death by her grandparents, Elester and Emmer Taylor and Ezekiel and Hattie B. McCoy.  

She entered into rest on June 17, 2019 at Jackson Hospital in Montgomery, Alabama.

She leaves to cherish her memories, Mother, Mary Taylor of Banning, CA; three sisters: Theresa Johnson of Riverside, CA; Sireyia Ratliff of Sacrament, CA; and Cherie Pearson (Markus) of Menifee, CA; two brothers: Alphonso Taylor of Hollywood, FL and James Taylor of Buena Park, CA; daughters: Sandra (Aurora) Thomas of Eufaula, AL, Tracye Woods and Towanda Biggers of Union Springs, AL, Shannon Ates of Montgomery, AL and Arnita (Denzel) Reese, Dothan, AL; a host of  grandchildren and great grandchildren; aunts: Guelma Townsend and Mahalia (Joseph) Walker, both of Bronx, NY; Dianne (Arron) Jacobs of Jacksonville, FL; other aunts and uncles, four sisters-in-law; two brother in-law, a host of nieces and nephews, several loving and devoted sister-cousins, caring special friends, and a host of other loving cousins, relatives and friends.
