Jimmy L. Farmer, 84, of Newville, Alabama, passed away Wednesday, September 27, 2017, after a brief illness. He was born October 21, 1932, in Shorterville, Alabama, to Lark Farmer, Jr. and Mae Neller (Neal) Farmer.

Jimmy grew up in Shorterville, Alabama. He graduated from the Henry County Training School in Abbeville, Alabama. After high school, he enrolled in the U.S. Army. He earned B.S., M.S., and Ed.S. degrees from Alabama State University in Elementary Education, Elementary/Secondary Education, and Supervision, respectively. He taught and served as an administrator in Henry County, Alabama, for over 30 years.

On June 7, 1964, Jimmy married the former Teresa Hogans. They were happily married for 53 years. To this union, one child, Monica Clarissa, was born.

Jimmy was active in numerous organizations. Among these include the Abbeville Memorial Church of God in Christ where he served as a Deacon and Sunday School Superintendent. He also served as the District Superintendent for five counties in the church district. He was an active Mason and served as the Worshipful Master of Magnolia Lodge #218 and the District Deputy for District 5. In addition, Jimmy was a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., and the Henry County Retired Teachers Association.

Jimmy was preceded in death by his parents Lark and Mae Neller Farmer; his sister Livie James; his brother James “Bud” Farmer, and two other siblings who passed at a very young age.

Jimmy is survived by his wife Teresa of Newville, Alabama; his daughter, Monica (Ishbah) Cox of Columbus, OH; sisters Rose Mae Beaufort, Ft. Lauderdale, FL; Varn Ceal (Robert, Sr.) Jones, Lauderhill, FL; Earnestean Savage, Shorterville, AL; Annie (Minister Johnny) Garrett, Havana, FL; and Rhoda Ruth (Jimmy) Watson, Brewton, AL; In-laws Joe Hogans, Newville, AL; Sarah Reynolds, Newville, AL; Anna Wright, Atlanta, GA; Mack (Anastasia) Hogans, Bellevue, WA; and Andrew Hogans, Atlanta, GA; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, other relatives, friends, and caregivers, including J.T. Flucker, Sonya Miller, Travis Reeves, Sarah Reynolds, Derrick Coleman, Don Wiggins, Farmer and Rosalind James, and Rickey Allen.

Family will receive friends at a visitation from 4 – 7 P.M. October 6, 2017, at Scott's Chapel Hill Mortuary at 814 Headland Avenue, Dothan, AL, with a formal program beginning at 6 P.M. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11 A.M. October 7, 2017, at First Baptist Church, 301 E Church Street, Headland, AL, with burial following at Gardens of Memory, 6200 US Highway 431 N, Headland, AL.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial, tax-deductible donations be made with a designation to the "Jimmy L. Farmer Scholarship" at Prince Hall Legacy Foundation, 319 17th Street North, Suite 201, Birmingham, Alabama, 35203.
