On February 24, 1925, in Birmingham, Alabama, Howard Williams and Luvonia Mallard Williams became the proud parents of a beautiful baby girl, Bernice.

Bernice lived and was raised by her grandmother, Rendee, in Clio, Alabama. She was educated in the Barbour County School System. After high school she met and married R.Q. Johnson. God blessed this union with eight children.

Bernice relocated to Miami in 1953. Her interest in sewing and decorating inspired her to enroll in sewing and upholstery classes. Her talent in sewing resulted in the beautiful designing and sewing of gowns for proms. She loved to cook and bake and was well known for her pound and red velvet cakes. Bernice also supported her family as a domestic worker.

Bernice’s love of God led her to Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, under the leadership of W.C.T. Tarpley, where she ministered in song in the “No. 1” choir.

On February 22, 1975, Bernice married Miles Evin. They both loved road trips and traveling as evidenced by cruises to different ports, visiting almost all fifty states, trips to the World’s Fair and to different countries in Europe.

Sister Ervin joined New Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Arthur Jackson, Jr. where she served faithfully as a deaconess and in the OES. Sister Ervin continued to be a faithful servant under the leadership of Pastor D.L. Powell.

Sister Ervin relocated to Dothan, Alabama, December 2010, where she became a member of St. Peter Community Church under the leadership of Pastor Leroy McLeroy. Sister Ervin was a prayer warrior and as a deaconess served faithfully until her health declined.

August 14, 2019, Sister Bernice Ervin moved from labor to reward to a mansion not made by hands; a place prepared for her by her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Bernice was preceded in death by her parents; four children: Bertha, Daniel, James and Jimmie.

She leaves to cherish fond and loving memories her two sons: Jerry (Betty) Johnson of Dothan, AL and Roy Johnson of Miami, FL; three daughters:  Addie "Ruth" Powe of Dothan, AL, Sarah Russell and JoAnn Sawyer of Miami, FL; twenty-one grandchildren, twenty-eight great grandchildren, and fourteen great-great grandchildren; one sister: Betty Hampton of Detroit, MI; sister-in-law: Celia Smith of Dothan, AL; daughter-in-law: Gerlean Johnson of Dothan, AL, son-in-law: Eric Russell, Jr. of Miami; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of other relatives and friends.
